Relationships can get tough sometimes, and not everyone is meant to be in your life permanently. Has your relationship gotten to a stage where you think it’s time for you to call it an end or take a break? How do you know your relationship is going downhill? Below are some signs that indicate it’s time to end your relationship.

1. YOU FIND IT HARD TO CONCENTRATE AND FOCUS. 

If your relationship is causing you to lose concentration and focus on your studies and every aspect of your life, then you need a break. Love should not make you lose focus on your ambition. For example, you started skipping classes to cook for a boyfriend, or you quit your job to have time for him/her. If you notice this sign, then you should take a break so you can focus on your life.

2. YOU HAVE NO ENERGY LATELY.

Is your relationship draining you so much that you hardly have time for yourself? Like you are the one who is always ready to initiate conversation, the one to apologize every time, the one to call or text. If yes, then you need a break.

3. YOU ARE GETTING NEGATIVE MORE OFTEN.

Relationships should bring out the best in us, but if the reverse is the case in yours, you should consider taking a break. Your partner should be a source of motivation for you during tough and good times, but if you always get negativity, this could be a sign it’s over between you and your partner.

4. ARGUING AND FIGHTING PUBLICLY.

Although argument is part of a healthy relationship, if you can’t stay in the same room without arguing and fighting. This is a sign that you need a break; perhaps this will give you time to figure out what is wrong with the relationship. Probably you and your partner are not meant for each other.

5. BORING CONVERSATION.

Do you still remember when you guys just met? How the conversation was so lively that you couldn’t even survive a day without hearing their voice, but now the conversation is boring. Even when you try to talk about things like how your day went and future calendars, you don’t get satisfactory responses. If the vibe in your relationship isn’t where it should be, a break might be what you need or better still end the relationship.

6. YOUR FUTURE TOGETHER IS UNCERTAIN.

Nobody wants to waste their time, so it’s necessary for you and your partner to be on the same page. Whether you have been together for years or just a few months, it doesn’t matter; as long as your future together is uncertain, you should consider leaving the relationship.

7. YOU ARE NOT SURE OF YOUR FEELINGS.

If you are not sure whether you have strong feelings and attraction toward them, taking a break will give you clarity. Taking a break is just to give some time to clear your head, think, and clarify whether you truly love the person.

8. S/HE DOESN’T LISTEN TO YOU.

If you don’t feel listened to or valued in the relationship, that is not a good sign, and taking a break will make you think clearly about what you are getting in the relationship.

9. YOU NOTICE SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

Change is the only thing that is constant in life; thus, if you notice something different about your partner, maybe in their attitude or character, for instance, s/he does things that annoy you most recently and doesn’t care to apologize, they talk trash to you and use verbal words on you, which is rare of them. This could be a sign that the relationship between you and your partner is over.

10.  S/HE NO LONGER TELLS YOU, “I LOVE YOU.”

The phrase “I love you” means a lot in a relationship, as it reminds your significant other how much they mean to you and how much you cherish them. However, if these words are no longer used or if they don’t tell you this in return, this is a bad sign because a relationship cannot survive without love.

11. NO ATTEMPTS ARE MADE TO SEE EACH OTHER.

Spending quality time together is one of the ways to tighten the bond in a relationship. It’s one thing to be in a distant relationship because distance can keep you apart, but when you are in a close relationship and there are no attempts to see each other at least once in a while, well, maybe your relationship can’t withstand it. Besides, what is the essence of a relationship when we can’t get a chance to be together?

12. POOR COMMUNICATION.

Communication is like the fuel of a car; without it, a car can’t function, and the same thing applies to relationships; without communication, they can never work. when the communication is poor and your significant other always blocks every means of communication, giving you unnecessary excuses. Do you see this sign in your relationship? If yes, then it’s time to end it.

13. THEIR PRESENCE ANNOYS YOU.

One of the signs to look for when it’s over between you and your partner is when their presence annoys you and you feel lonely when together. For instance, S/he came to visit, and you feel like they should just go. When it’s time for dinner, you feel like nobody is there with you.

What Should I Do If I Notice These Signs? 

First, before you decide to end the relationship, call your partner’s attention to it because, at this junction, your relationship is on the verge of collapse. Talk about your feelings and what you both want from the relationship. If you notice all these signs still persist despite making them aware, you need to take a break from the relationship, or better yet, consider it over.

Is it good to take a break from a relationship? 

A break may help you better understand your needs, goals, and connection to your partner and also reset the relationship. It also gives you the option of deciding whether to end or continue the relationship.

Should I Take a Break or End the Relationship? 

Change doesn’t happen overnight; if your partner is willing to change, then you can give them some time to adjust, but if nothing changes, then it’s time for you to end the relationship permanently. Taking a break means giving them space, so whatever break you want to take should not exceed 3 weeks. In most cases, a break leads to a permanent breakup. 

Also, it depends on the reasons why you want to take a break. If you guys had a minor fight, you can give them some space or take a break for the issue to cool off. However, if you think the relationship is giving you too much stress and making you lose focus on other aspects of your life, you may have to end it.

Sometimes, when I have a misunderstanding or argue with my partner, I do take a week’s break or a few days’ break to protest what they did that pisses me off, and we always come back together stronger.
