NAPS Secures Leniency for 32 Sanctioned Students at Auchi Polytechnic, Applauds Management’s Decision

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has announced a major breakthrough following its intervention in the disciplinary case involving 32 students of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, who were previously rusticated and expelled over their involvement in a protest in May 2025.
In an official statement, NAPS disclosed that the protest, which led to the destruction of institutional property worth millions of naira, resulted in strict disciplinary measures against the affected students. Subsequent reviews confirmed that some of the students were culpable of serious misconduct in violation of the Polytechnic’s rules and regulations.
Acting on appeals from the students and their families, NAPS formally engaged the institution’s management through a letter dated March 23, 2026. In its correspondence, the association strongly condemned the actions of the students while also appealing for leniency and an opportunity for rehabilitation.
Following the intervention, the Governing Council of Auchi Polytechnic reviewed the case and invited NAPS representatives for further engagement. A delegation led by the NAPS President, Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, paid a courtesy visit to the institution to appreciate the management’s consideration and to facilitate dialogue toward a peaceful resolution.
The delegation included Comrade Yakubu Peter Odion, Executive Chairman of NANS JCC Edo State Axis, alongside other student leaders and stakeholders who contributed to the negotiation process.
During the meeting, the Rector of Auchi Polytechnic, Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar, expressed concern over the actions of the students but noted that the institution decided to adopt a more compassionate and corrective approach after careful deliberation.
As part of the resolutions reached, students who were initially rusticated have been fully exonerated, while those who were expelled have had their penalties reduced to rustication and are expected to resume in the next academic session. The affected students will also be required to take responsibility for damages caused during the protest.
In addition, arrangements have been made for students who missed their examinations to sit for them alongside evening programme students.
NAPS commended the management of Auchi Polytechnic for demonstrating understanding, fairness, and a willingness to give affected students a second chance. The association described the decision as a reflection of administrative wisdom and a commitment to student rehabilitation and welfare.
The body also used the opportunity to caution students across polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of technology nationwide to avoid actions that violate institutional regulations or disrupt academic activities. It emphasized that while student advocacy remains important, it must be carried out responsibly and within the framework of law and order.
Reaffirming its commitment to constructive engagement, NAPS stated that it will continue to protect students’ interests through dialogue, peaceful negotiation, and responsible leadership, while encouraging a culture of discipline and academic focus among students.
