Further Clarification and Explanation on HND Applicants/Students' Registration on the NBTE Portal

It is no longer news that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has issued a new directive, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session, requiring applicants for Higher National Diploma (HND) admission to register on the NBTE portal via https://hnd.nbte.gov.ng/

Following this directive, many HND applicants are still confused about whether it is mandatory for all HND applicants to register on the portal. This post will provide further insight into the directive.

What is the purpose of HND Admission registration on the NBTE portal?

1. POLYTECHNICS ADMITTING MORE THAN THEIR CAPACITY

Many polytechnics in Nigeria are admitting more students than their capacity allows. These schools reportedly use part-time programs to generate revenue. This is against the laid-down procedures regarding admission quotas. Each school has a specific capacity it is allowed to admit each year, but some schools admit more than their carrying capacity. This is one of the reasons why the NBTE created this portal: https://hnd.nbte.gov.ng/login to monitor the admission process across various polytechnics in Nigeria and ensure that no polytechnic admits more than its capacity.

2. Accreditation Issues.

Some polytechnics in Nigeria, especially private polytechnics, are running unaccredited programs, which has been a major challenge for students. In a bid to tackle this issue, the board directed that all HND applicants must register on the portal to ensure that only NBTE-accredited HND programs are being applied for by each institution.

Some polytechnics are running programs that are not accredited by NBTE. To be on the safe side and to ensure that the course you applied for is fully accredited by NBTE, you are advised to register on the NBTE HND admission portal.

3. NYSC Mobilization Issues.

JAMB has stopped the regularization of part-time programs; thus, only full-time students or graduates are eligible for the NYSC program. If you did part-time or daily part-time in your ND, there is a possibility that you may not be eligible to participate in the NYSC program. This is the major reason why the NBTE created this portal: https://hnd.nbte.gov.ng/login for applicants to register so that when they graduate, the board can forward their names to NYSC for mobilization. If you did ND part-time, please make sure you register as soon as possible.

I did an ND full-time program. Do I still need to register on the NBTE portal?

Yes, the registration is for all HND applicants, though it is not compulsory for this category of students, particularly if your school has not issued the directive to register on the NBTE portal. For those who did ND full-time, this directive may be optional because they don’t have NYSC mobilization issues.

I did an ND part-time or daily part-time program. Do I need to register on the portal?

Yes, it is compulsory for you to register on the NBTE HND admission portal for seamless mobilization as an HND NYSC Corp member. The purpose of the registration is to be eligible for the NYSC program.

I’ve been offered HND admission already. Do I still need to register?

Yes, whether your school has offered you admission already or not, it is crucial to register on the portal, especially if you did part-time in your ND or if you were admitted outside JAMB CAPS. This policy is effective from the 2024/2025 academic session onwards. Even though you have already been offered admission, you still need to register to be on the safe side.

I have done my JAMB regularization. Should I register too?

If you were offered admission outside JAMB CAPS and later completed JAMB regularization, ensure you register on the NBTE HND admission portal for seamless NYSC mobilization after graduation. For clarity, this update is effective from the 2024/2025 academic session onwards. It applies to all applicants who applied for HND admission from the 2024/2025 academic session upwards.

My school didn’t instruct us to register on the NBTE portal. Why?

Some schools, like Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic among others, are already informing their HND applicants to register on the NBTE portal. If you haven’t received such a directive, it might be because your school is not yet complying with this directive. Nonetheless, register and obtain your NBTE registration number to be on the safe side.

Is it NBTE that will give us admission?

No! It is your school that will offer you admission, not NBTE. The purpose of the registration is for NBTE to monitor all polytechnic admission processes and ensure the mobilization of HND graduates for NYSC, especially those who did part-time in ND.

Is the NBTE HND admission registration for all HND applicants or part-time only?

It is strictly for all HND applicants but is not compulsory for those who did full-time in their ND, as these students do not have NYSC mobilization issues. However, I would advise you to register to be on the safe side.

NB: IF YOUR SCHOOL DIDN’T GIVE YOU A DIRECTIVE TO REGISTER, YOU CAN IGNORE IT, BUT DO NOT IGNORE THE REGISTRATION IF YOU DID PART-TIME. MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER.

In conclusion, the major purpose of the NBTE HND admission registration is for smooth NYSC mobilization and regulation of HND admission process. The NBTE registration is for all HND applicants, whether full-time or part-time.

However, this registration is optional for you if you did full-time in ND and your school hasn’t given you the directive to register on the NBTE portal.
