NYSC Announces Major Reforms to Boost National Development and Youth Engagement

The National Youth Service Corps has announced its readiness to implement comprehensive reforms aimed at addressing emerging national challenges and strengthening its contribution to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during the opening ceremony of the 2026 NYSC Annual Management Conference held in Jos, Plateau State.
According to the Director General, the scheme has reached a level of maturity that requires it to move beyond symbolic nation-building and focus on more measurable and impact-driven contributions to national growth.
He explained that the focus of the reforms is no longer about questioning the relevance of the NYSC, but about how its vast human capital can be deliberately and strategically deployed to address pressing national issues.
Nafiu stated that Nigeria’s changing population dynamics, evolving security realities, and rapid technological advancement make it necessary for the scheme to continuously adapt and innovate.
An internal review of the scheme’s operations over the past year, he said, revealed the need for system strengthening, improved service delivery, and better alignment with present-day realities.
He added that management is committed to reforms that will enhance operational efficiency, ensure sustainability, and position the NYSC as a more effective driver of national development.
The Director General urged conference participants to critically assess existing processes, exchange practical experiences, and propose innovative solutions capable of improving performance and overall impact.
He described the NYSC as one of Nigeria’s most valuable pools of human capital, citing its large numerical strength, annual intake of graduates, and the diverse academic and professional backgrounds of corps members across the country.
Nafiu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support of the scheme, as well as the Plateau State Government for hosting the conference.
Declaring the conference open, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang commended the NYSC for its sustained role in promoting unity, development, and national integration.
The governor described the scheme as a strategic institution in Nigeria’s development journey and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting its activities in the state.
Represented by his deputy, Josephine Piyo, Mutfwang announced the ongoing renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Mangu Local Government Area and the allocation of additional land for agricultural projects.
He disclosed that several hectares of land have been approved for agricultural use at the camp, expressing confidence that the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Exercise would take place at the upgraded facility.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, was also acknowledged for providing policy direction and strategic guidance to strengthen youth development initiatives under the scheme.
The conference, themed “NYSC as a Catalyst for National Development: Tackling Present Challenges and Charting Sustainable Solutions,” is expected to generate actionable ideas that will improve policy implementation, enhance youth engagement, and reinforce the scheme’s relevance in Nigeria’s evolving economic and security landscape.
