7 Reasons Why Yahoo Boys and Hookup Girls are Rampant in Nigeria Despite Government Clampdown

Internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, are becoming rampant in Nigeria every day despite the government’s clampdown. Boys involved in the illicit business have various ways of duping their victims, mostly foreigners. These range from romance scams, email phishing, business email compromise fraud, identity theft, and impersonation to generate bogus business transactions that look too good to be true and shady business deals running into millions of Naira, usually in hard currencies.

Hookup girls, on the other hand, are corporate prostitutes who sell their sexual pleasure in exchange for money online and offline. Their partners are yahoo boys, politicians, and sex-craving men.

Even as the Nigerian government declared war on Internet fraud and jailed the convicted ones, Yahoo has never reduced in anyway. In this article, we shall briefly explain why Yahoo boys and hookup girls are rampant in Nigeria while providing the possible solutions to eradicate this menace.

1. POVERTY

The major reason why Yahoo boys are rampant in Nigeria is poverty. Only a few Nigerians can afford to spend #1,000 daily. When the suffering becomes too much and unbearable, they feel the most convenient way to make it on time Is through Yahoo or by hookup, so they try every possible means to scam innocent people online under false pretenses. Some will even do rituals like eating feces and drinking human blood to get rich quick in a bid to eradicate poverty.

2. OVERPOPULATION AND EARLY MARRIAGE

Nigeria is referred to as the giant of Africa, and this may be because of our population. Perhaps the country is known to be the most populated country in Africa. When the population is large, the allocated resources can’t be enough. Imagine a man who earns #30,000 per month marrying five wives and producing over 10 children.

How will he take care of them? Of course, the children will become a menace to society and will look for desperate means to survive, and the easiest way to achieve that is through Yahoo. Early marriage is what leads to overpopulation, and overpopulation is one of the major reasons why Yahoo thrives in Nigeria.

Another reason why Yahoo boys and hookup girls are rampant in Nigeria is due to the lack of job opportunities for our graduates and youths. In fact, to secure a good job in Nigeria, you must have a strong connection. Universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other schools produce over 1 million graduates each year while there is no company or establishment to absorb them.

After seeking jobs and submitting their CVs, nothing productive comes out, so they become frustrated and invest their time in scamming other people as their source of income. While the females among them adopt prostitution and code it as “hookup,” The few ladies who can’t do the hookup business would rather date a Yahoo boy for financial benefits.

By the way, if you ask most of the Nigerian youths why they are doing Yahoo and hookups, what you will likely hear from them is, “Where is the job?” Well, I don’t blame them; besides, how do you expect someone who earns #15,000 per month to survive after paying for electricity, transportation, house rent, food, and other bills? You can see why Yahoo boys and hookup girls are becoming rampant in Nigeria. Some of them never wished to start this dirty work, but they had no choice due to hunger and a lack of job opportunities.

4. OPPRESSION

Average Nigerians easily get oppressed by their friends’ achievements or what they see on social media. When they see that their friends have gone for in life, they begin to say “God when,” not minding the person’s source of wealth, so they intentionally switch to Yahoo or hookup businesses to get funds to oppress their oppressor because they also want to belong and chill with the big boys and girls in town. As long as social media is still active in Nigeria, Yahoo will thrive because not everyone is capable of resisting the temptation.

5. IMPATIENCE.

Some of the youths who engage in Yahoo and hookup businesses lack patience. They probably don’t believe in humble beginnings or are tired of trying, so they see this as their biggest opportunity to make it in life. Imagine telling someone who makes #50,000 per night through a hookup business or someone who makes $500 per week through Yahoo to apply for #30,000 jobs per month. It will be difficult for them to quit because money is sweet and they will be eager for more, so this is one of the reasons why Yahoo and Hookup will continue to thrive in Nigeria despite the government clampdown.

Imagine the amount of money they make, and no wonder most of them live a lavish life and can’t stop it. This is because there is no business they can do to earn such a huge amount in dollars, euros, or pounds quickly.

Even though there are many freelancing jobs online where one can earn thousands of dollars, it will actually take time, and that is where the problems come in. Some of the youths are tired of waiting, so they either do Yahoo to get rich quick or hookup to get funds. 800 multiplied by $1,000 will give about #800,000. Now you can see why Yahoo boys are rampant. If one gets $1,000 from a client, that’s almost #800,000 in Nigerian naira. So how will you convince them to leave that work and focus on a #30–50k per month job?

No wonder our girls no longer marry for love; instead, they marry for who can pay the bills and date men who will take care of their responsibilities.

You must have come across the popular slang, “I want to make Mama proud.” Most youths want to make their parents proud; they want to buy cars and build houses for their families so they can be seen as the breadwinners. Perhaps some of them wouldn’t have join Yahoo if not for the pressure and frustration from their parents.

SOLUTION TO ERADICATE YAHOO YAHOO AND HOOKUP BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

1. PROVISION OF JOBS

I think the government should try as much as they can to provide adequate jobs for the youth. They say an “Idle hand is the devil’s workshop.” When there are job opportunities for graduates and citizens, this will limit cyber fraud and hookup business in the country.

A fine that isn’t up to the 10% of the money they swindled from their victims.
