Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic to Host New Research Hub as Abia State Expands Education Investment

The Abia State Ministry of Tertiary Education has concluded plans to establish a modern Research Hub at the Osisioma Campus of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, a strategic move expected to strengthen academic research, innovation, and institutional development within the state’s tertiary education sector.
The development was disclosed by the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Prof. Christopher Okoro Kalu, during a management meeting held on Tuesday. He briefed the institution’s leadership on recent engagements with the Ministry and provided updates on key projects currently underway at the Osisioma Campus.
According to the Rector, the Ministry of Tertiary Education has already approved and allocated funding for the establishment of the Research Hub, reinforcing the government’s commitment to advancing research capacity, technological development, and quality education in public tertiary institutions. He added that the Ministry has also committed to furnishing campus buildings that have already been awarded, a step that will accelerate academic and administrative activities at the campus.
In further support of infrastructure development, the Ministry will contribute to the construction of internal road networks within the campus, aimed at improving accessibility, safety, and overall learning environment for staff and students.
Prof. Okoro also announced plans to establish a Demonstration School within the Polytechnic community to serve the educational needs of staff children. The proposed school will offer education from crèche level through secondary school, providing a structured and convenient learning option for staff families while enhancing the institution’s community services.
Addressing academic administration, the Rector issued firm directives to staff responsible for student academic records. He instructed that all outstanding student results must be uploaded without delay and emphasized that certificates for graduating students must be ready by Monday. He stressed that inefficiencies in academic documentation would no longer be tolerated, noting that institutional progress depends on accountability and professionalism across all departments.
Speaking on the Polytechnic’s development agenda, Prof. Okoro reiterated that the complete relocation and operational transition to the Osisioma Campus remains the institution’s top priority for the year. He described the move as critical to unlocking long-term growth, attracting research funding, and positioning the Polytechnic as a competitive center for technical and higher education in Nigeria.
The Rector concluded by commending the management team for their dedication and cooperation, expressing confidence that the institution is on track to achieve milestones that will exceed previous accomplishments and strengthen its reputation within the national education landscape.
