NCC Compensation 2026: How to Get Paid by MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile for Poor Network Service in Nigeria

Nigeria’s telecom subscribers can now earn compensation for poor network service as the Nigerian Communications Commission rolls out a new consumer protection policy designed to hold mobile operators accountable.
Under this latest development, leading telecom providers including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and 9mobile are now required to compensate users automatically whenever network service falls below approved standards.
This marks a major shift in Nigeria’s telecom industry, where instead of paying regulatory fines to the government, operators must now credit affected subscribers directly with airtime or data as compensation.
The new policy officially took effect in April 2026, with payments already being processed and backdated to cover verified service failures recorded from November 2025.
For millions of Nigerians dealing with dropped calls, failed SMS, and slow internet speeds, this framework introduces a new way to recover value for money spent on telecom services.
The compensation system is fully automated, meaning users no longer need to contact customer care or file complaints before receiving payouts. Telecom companies are now mandated to detect network failures using internal monitoring systems and identify affected locations.
If your area experiences substandard service, your line will be credited without any manual request.
To qualify for compensation, certain conditions must be met. First, you must be located in a Local Government Area where network quality has dropped below the threshold set by the NCC. This is often referred to as a “red zone,” where service disruptions are officially recorded.
Secondly, you must have carried out at least one billable activity during the outage period. This could include making a call, sending a text message, or using mobile data.
Once the system confirms eligibility, your network provider will send you an SMS notification detailing the compensation amount and the reason for the credit.
One of the most attractive aspects of this policy is that the airtime credited is not restricted. Unlike promotional bonuses, the compensation comes as regular airtime with no expiry date.
Subscribers can use the credited balance to make local or international calls, purchase data bundles, or access USSD banking services.
This development is expected to significantly improve user experience across Nigeria’s telecom sector. By forcing operators to compensate customers for downtime, the NCC is effectively making poor service delivery costly for telecom companies.
Industry data indicates that Nigeria recorded over 570 major network outages in the first quarter of 2026 alone, largely due to fibre cuts and infrastructure vandalism. With this new policy in place, operators now have stronger financial incentives to fix faults quickly and invest in more reliable infrastructure.
In addition, the NCC is working alongside the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to address ongoing concerns around unused or expired data bundles, further strengthening consumer rights in the telecom space.
As the rollout continues nationwide, subscribers are advised to monitor their balances for unexpected airtime credits labelled as regulatory compensation. It is also important to pay attention to SMS alerts from network providers, as they may contain key details about payouts.
With this policy now active, Nigerians can expect improved service delivery and greater accountability from telecom operators, while also benefiting financially when network performance falls short.
