Everything You Need to Know About Osun State Polytechnic Iree (OSPOLY)

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OSPOLY.

Osun State Polytechnic, Iree was established as a Satellite Campus of the Polytechnic, Ibadan in 1981. It became a full-fledged institution in October, 1992, when the law establishing the institution was signed by the First Executive Governor of the State, Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke. The Polytechnic was established to produce middle-level manpower, particularly in the fields of Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Management and Financial Studies.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY.

Osun Poly is hosted in the Iree Local Government Area of Osun State. The town is dominated majorly by the Yoruba tribe and others. About 45 percent of the people living in Iree community are students of the Osun State Polytechnic. POS, car wash, Okada and commercial bus service, boutiques, gas stations, hotels, and restaurants are some of the more common businesses in Iree town. The crime rate in the polytechnic community is low. As at the time of publishing this report, academic and non-academic activities are going on peacefully in the polytechnic and the polytechnic community.

THE POLYTECHNIC CAMPUSES.

The Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree operates on two campuses: the main campus and the Koko campus, both in Iree Town. The main campus is for full-time programmes, and the Koko campus is for part-time programmes. In other words, we could say that the main campus is being used by ND and HND full-time students while the Koko campus is being used by the daily part-time students. The Koko Campus is a mini campus and both campuses belong to Osun Poly.

OSPOLY IREE PROGRAMMES.

The Osun State Polytechnic runs three (3) programmes; the full-time, Part-time, and NCE programmes.

1. FULL-TIME PROGRAMME: This programme is available at both National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND) and Nigeria Certificate Education (NCE) levels and is meant for students who were admitted through Jamb. Osun State Polytechnic conducts a screening exercise to admit students into its full-time programmes and those who pass will be offered admission to the full-time programme. Lectures start at 8:00 am and at 6 pm in the evening. The full-time programme makes use of the main campus for its lectures. The duration of a full-time programme is 2 years.

2. PART-TIME/DPT PROGRAMME: OSPOLY IREE part-time programme, which is popularly known as “DPT”, is a direct entry programme for students who couldn’t meet the school’s admission eligibility. With or without jamb, you can gain admission to Osun State Polytechnic through the DPT programme. Lectures start at 8 a.m. every day. The difference between the full-time programme and the DPT programme is school fees and class allocation. According to the statistics we obtained, part-time students pay more than full-time students. The benefit of this programme is that it saves you from the stress of sitting for another JAMB as you will be able to graduate with your mates without stress. The part-time students make use of the Koko campus for lectures. The duration of this programme is two(2) years and it’s only available at National Diploma level.

3. NIGERIA CERTIFICATE EDUCATION (NCE) PROGRAMME: NCE is a certificate given to graduates of a college of education after a three-year course. NCE holders are recognized as certified teachers. So, indirectly, we could say this programme is meant for students who would like to become teachers in the future. OSPOLY Iree has a mini building at the main campus for NCE programmes. The duration of this programme is 3 years.

The Differences Between the Full-Time and Daily Part-Time(Dpt) Programmes.

As stated earlier, there is not much difference between the two programmes. However, daily part-time students make use of the Koko campus while full-time students make use of the main campus. Both programmes are two(2) years, and school fees are different. That is, the amount of school fees that full-time students pay is different from that of the DPT. The daily part-time program is only available at the National Diploma (ND) level; there is no daily part-time programme at HND level. The full-time programme admits a few students, while DPT admits as many as possible. both uses different academic calendar.

OSUN STATE POLY SCHOOL FEES.

Osun Poly Iree school fees range from 55k to 70k depending on your faculty and department. The students also pay other dues like SUG dues, departmental dues, and medical insurance, among others. The acceptance fee for newly admitted students is #20,000 excluding charges. Full-time students pay between #50-60,000 per session, while part-time students pay between 60k and above.

OSPOLY ACCOMMODATION.

Students need to seek accommodation in Iree town because Osun State Polytechnic does not have a hostel on campus. So, if you are an aspirant hoping to gain admission to OSPOLY, you will need to find accommodation for yourself. Accommodation in Iree depends on how close it is to the polytechnic. Single rooms in Iree range from 25k to 60k depending on your budget, while self-contained rooms range from 80k and above. Some of the popular streets in Iree where students dominate the most are Ladoja, Poly Junction, Estate, Plastona, Oke Glo, Ada, Small London, White Mosque, Iga1, Iga2, BHS, among others.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES.

Osun State Polytechnic, Iree is one of the fastest and best polytechnic in Nigeria. The polytechnic does not delay activities, and their academic calendar is very fast, which means that choosing OSPOLY equals graduating on time. Semester examination results are always released on notice boards towards the end of every semester. The cost of textbooks and handouts in Iree Poly ranges from #1,000 and above.

ADMISSION TO OSUN STATE POLYTECHNIC.

OSPOLY is one of the easiest institutions to gain admission to in Nigeria as the process is simple.

A. NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND) AND NCE: To gain admission to Osun Poly Iree ND and NCE Programmes, applicants must possess at least 5 credits in relevant subjects at not more than two sittings in O’level and score at least 120 above in their UTME. If you didn’t score up to 120 in your UTME, you can apply for the DPT form, which is direct entry. After obtaining the POST UTME/DPT form, you will be invited for a physical screening where your credentials will be vetted and, thereafter, you will be offered admission.

2. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND): Applicants must have at least 5 O’level credits in relevant subjects and a minimum of lower credit at National Diploma level. Candidates with PASS grade may be considered for admission with evidence of two(2) years working experience. After obtaining the application form, you will be invited for a screening, and after the screening, you may be offered admission depending on your performance during the screening.

Ospoly has 7 faculties and over 20 departments. Some of the departments with the highest number of students are mass communication, business administration, science laboratory technology, and civil engineering, among others.

The faculties in the polytechnic are: Faculty of Information and Communication Technology; Faculty of Science; Faculty of Arts and Industrial Design; Faculty of Engineering; Faculty of Environmental Studies; Faculty of Management Studies; and Faculty of Financial Studies.
