The 11 Most Underrated and Less Competitive Courses in Nigerian Polytechnics

The 11 Most Underrated and Less Competitive Courses in Nigerian Polytechnics

A course is the field in which a student studies to achieve his academic ambition. The course can be studied either in universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education.

There are over 40 courses that can be studied in Nigerian polytechnics. Unfortunately, not all the courses are highly demanded in society, and this could be one of the reasons why students do not really like to study these courses: they are underrated.

They opted in for the less competitive course, probably because they didn’t qualify for the course they initially wanted to study and had no other choice than to apply for a change of course to the less competitive courses.

What are underrated and less competitive courses? They are the courses that may be popular, but students do not like them. In other words, underrated courses are those that seem to be less demanding and more prone to unemployment. Less competitive courses are those that are always small in population, and the cut-off marks are usually low.

What most students fail to understand is that these underrated courses are the best and, if possible, one gets employment opportunities. The minimum wage, if it was to be an establishment here in Nigeria, is N100,000 per month. Unfortunately, not everyone sees the good sides of these courses because they are less competitive due to the negative attitude of students towards them.

So what are these courses that are less competitive and underrated Courses in Nigerian polytechnics? They are as listed below.

1. FISHERIES TECHNOLOGY.

Fisheries Technology is always underrated by students because some of them see the course as useless. When you tell them, “I am a Fishery Tech student,” they laugh at you, saying that where will you work? Actually, this course is very good, but the negative attitude of Nigerian students towards it makes it underrated. In fact , hardly will a student willingly choose the course when filling out for admission, and this is why the course is less competitive. Fisheries Technology is one of the most undeterred courses in Nigerian polytechnics.

2. AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY.

Agricultural Technology is without doubt the best course, but the negative attitude of Nigerian students towards the course makes it underrated. During my undergraduate days in school, most applicants didn’t choose the course willingly until the school forced them to do so through a change of course. Agricultural Technology is a beautiful course, but average Nigerian students would choose other courses over Agricultural Technology, which makes the course less competitive.

3. WELDING AND FABRICATION.

Welding and fabrication is a nice course, but the department is less competitive. Some students often see the course as useless because, to them, they think it’s difficult to get employment opportunities with the certificate. Perhaps you will hardly find a student who will gladly choose welding and fabrication as a course.

4. NUTRITION AND DIETETICS.

Though the course is less competitive, it is one of the best courses in the polytechnic as products of this department can work as nutritionists in the areas of therapeutic cooking, training, presentation, sports nutrition, corporate wellness, etc. If you see the beauty in this department, then you will understand that it should not be underrated. Unfortunately, some students see this course as useless.

5. HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT.

Hospitality management is a good course, and the department is less competitive. Although this course isn’t prone to unemployment, it is underrated. In fact, some students do say that they haven’t heard of the course before. If you check the cut off marks for hospitality management in Nigerian polytechnics, you will observe that it is low compared to other courses. I must confess, hospitality management is one of the best courses that is underrated in Nigerian polytechnics.

6. STATISTICS.

Statistics is one of the best courses in the school of science that can be studied in Nigerian polytechnics, but the course is less competitive and underrated. Students who choose statistics willingly are few, and to be sincere, the course is very tough. Products from this department can work anywhere, even in banks, private and government establishments. The course is one of the best, but unfortunately, it is underrated by Nigerian students.

7. LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE.

The Library and Information Science department is sometimes attached to the School of Communication. This course is one of the best, but it’s usually underrated by students and less competitive. Maybe because the course has a low chance of getting jobs or for whatever reasons that are best known to the students. I’ve studied students’ reactions to LIS. The department is underrated. Well, if you are studying LIS, just ignore the negative comments of people about the course. It is a nice course, provided that is what you love to study.

8. MUSIC TECHNOLOGY.

Music Technology is not that popular, but it is a course that can be studied in Nigerian polytechnics. The course is less competitive and underrated as most students do not really like it. The department is very small in population. Nigerian students need to understand that Music Technology is one of the best courses in the polytechnic, especially if you have a passion for music. Unfortunately, this department has always been underrated by Nigerian students. Well, to me, music technology is still one of the best courses in the polytechnic.

10.  LOCAL GOVERNMENT STUDIES.

Local Government Studies is a nice course to study, but the course is low-competitive and underrated by Nigerian students. Some students have never heard of “Local Government Studies” before; in fact, some polytechnics do not bother to accredit the programme for their school because it is very low in demand, and as you know, in Nigeria, people don’t study for knowledge; they study for a job. So the question, “Where can I work?” has discouraged many from pursuing the knowledge and beauty of this course.

11. FASHION DESIGN AND  CLOTHING TECHNOLOGY.

Fashion design is one of the most underrated courses in Nigerian polytechnics. The department is low in demand and less competitive. There are many polytechnics that offer Fashion Design and Clothing Technology but the students studying the course are not  up-to hundred(100) in each school. This may be connected to the fact that the course is underrated, but only students that are studying the course can tell you the benefits and beauty involved in the course. This course is still one of the best, but Nigerian students do not see the best in the course.

In conclusion, every course is unique and good to study, but you see, all these aforementioned 1–11 departments are the underrated and less competitive courses in Nigerian polytechnics. To the best of my knowledge, you should not bother about the negative things that people say about your course. You should study what you have a passion for. Education is not really all about going to school and using the certificate to apply for jobs. Instead, focus more on the knowledge and benefits you get from the course. With this, I believe you will be able to make an impact the world with the knowledge and skills you gained from the course. The fact that other people can’t secure a job with the certificates from these courses doesn’t make the courses useless. Destiny isn’t the same for all men. Best of luck to you in your studies.
