Finally, in 1993, the State Polytechnic was taken over by the Federal Government and was renamed Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

2. THE REGULAR2 PROGRAMME.

This is an afternoon or evening program that is almost the same as the R1 programme. The school can’t offer admission to all candidates who applied, so they will automatically offer you an R2(evening) programme once the space for full-time(morning) is full. This programme is also two(2) years. The lectures start in the afternoon, and this is why the alternate name for the programme is Afternoon/Evening programme.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE R1 AND R2 PROGRAMMES.

Both Regular1 and Regular2 programmes are the same in the sense that the students will be issued the same certificate and be admitted on the same admission eligibility. They pay the same school fees. However, R2 students usually pay for “consultancy fees,” which cost about fifteen thousand naira (#15,000), but R1 students do not pay for consultancy fees. R1 students receive lectures at the main campus, while R2 students receive lectures at the Ufuma campus, a few kilometers from the main campus.

Transportation from the Ufuma campus to the main campus costs three hundred naira (#300). The R2 programme is good. Perhaps it is better than risking another year at home to write Jamb again. The R2 students spend their first year at the Ufuma campus and their second year at the main campus. This means that all academic activities for NDI will be done at Ufuma campus, and your NDII will be done at the Main campus, so you are only using one Academic session at the Ufuma campus.

OKO POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL FEES.

The Federal Polytechnic Oko is one of the cheapest and most affordable schools in the Southeast as full-time students pay tuition fees of between 40K and 35K per session depending on their faculty and department. The acceptance fee costs #25,000. Other fees paid by students are medical fees, consultancy fees (for R2 students only), Data capture, library, and ICT, amongst others. Although tuition fees are considered cheap, if we add other fees being paid by the students with tuition fees, it’s a bit expensive. However, if you wish to study at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, I will advise you to be financially stable as the school takes a lot of bills.

THE CHALLENGES OF BEING A STUDENT AT OKO POLY.

The students of the polytechnic have always lamented the compulsory payment for textbooks, handouts, practicals, and logbooks. Oko Polytechnic lecturers love money to the extent that they compel students to buy their textbooks or else risk carryover. This has been a normal practice by the lecturers, which is a challenge for students because even the student union and management couldn’t stop them. Thus, if you want to go to school in Oko Poly, it’s best to budget money for textbooks because they are made compulsory.
