BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OROGUN

The Federal Government, following a bill sponsored in the 9th Assembly by the then Deputy President of the Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR, approved the establishment of the Federal polytechnic Orogun.The approval for the establishment was granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. Thereafter, the institution advertised for applications from suitably qualified candidates for academic and non-academic positions.

After a series of interviews during the selection process, under the supervision of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), a total of two hundred persons were employed to initiate the institution’s academic activities. Among the pioneering staff of the institution are one hundred and nine teaching staff and ninety-one non-teaching staff, all of whom have fully assumed duty, while the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) capturing process is ongoing.

The Federal Polytechnic Orogun, situated in Orhomuru-Orogun, in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, commenced academic activities as the staff assumed duty. The lively environment and new wave of businesses have given commuters a breath of fresh air. This development has, in multiple ways, impacted the economic and social activities of the locals, both in the Orhomuru community and neighboring towns.

Some of the most popular departments in the polytechnic are the Department of Business Administration, Science Laboratory Technology, and Mass Communication, among others. The school does not have a dress code for students, but indecent dressing is not allowed on campus. Students are advised to always dress decently when attending lectures to avoid embarrassment from security. The polytechnic’s lecturers are also friendly. Handouts and textbooks are not mandatory for students.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY

The polytechnic is hosted in Orogun town in Delta State. Some of the major businesses in the polytechnic community include farming, fishing, trading, the buying and selling of goods, commercial transportation services, and POS businesses, among others. At the time of gathering this information, there are no banks in the polytechnic community, as most villagers conduct their transactions through POS services.

The village head, Chief Benjamin U. F. Ojiri, the Omamede of Orogun Kingdom and Okarorho of Orhomuru community, said: “With the school being here, soon we expect banks and other government institutions to establish their offices in the community.

“No doubt, the people of Orogun will forever be grateful to the immediate past Deputy President of the Senate for turning a hitherto obscure village into a megacity with the siting of the Federal Polytechnic in the community and the state.”

“The presence of the institution is already having a positive impact on our area. The community is already feeling the impact, even though it has not fully gained ground. The local people working there are already earning salaries. We have a lot of visitors in the community, which is making businesses thrive.”

The polytechnic community is very peaceful and has no security challenges, meaning your life and property are safe in the community, as crime rates are minimal.

The polytechnic is located at No. 10 Orhomuru, Orogun Road, Orogun, Ughelli North LGA, Delta State, Nigeria.

FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OROGUN PROGRAMS

The Federal Polytechnic Orogun, as of the time of publishing this article, runs a full-time program only, and admission is strictly by JAMB.

FULL-TIME PROGRAM: This program is for full-time students, with lectures held between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Admission is through JAMB, which means that to gain admission to the Federal Polytechnic Orogun’s full-time program, you must have taken the most recent UTME and scored at least 100.

ADMISSION TO THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OROGUN

Admission to the Federal Polytechnic Orogun is easy and fast without stress. Provided you meet the O’level requirements for your course and scored 100 in the UTME, your admission is 99% guaranteed. Applicants who wish to study at the Federal Polytechnic Orogun must possess at least five credits in O’level, including English Language, Mathematics, and any other three relevant subjects. Additionally, you are expected to make the polytechnic your first choice to expedite the process. For now, the polytechnic is looking for more students to enroll, so the earlier you apply for admission, the better.

The school does not conduct entrance or post-UTME examinations for applicants. Just apply for the form and expect admission. What you need is your O’level result and JAMB result.

CHALLENGES STUDENTS FACE AT THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OROGUN

The major challenge in the community is the lack of banks, so students may need to travel to nearby towns for banking services. However, POS services are available for deposits and withdrawals. Moreover, the polytechnic community is somewhat rural, so if you are the type of student who prefers a more urban setting with modern infrastructure, you may not find the polytechnic community to your liking. However, if your primary focus is education, then you are welcome.
