Polytechnics that offer ND/HND Civil Engineering Technology With their Entry Requirements
National Diploma ProgrammeThe National Diploma Programme in Civil Engineering Technology is aimed at producing technicians for both the public and private sectors of the economy who can also be self-establishing and self-reliant.
On the completion of this programme, the diplomate should be able to:
- Function as a foreman on a construction site
- Produce good Civil Engineering drawings and schedules
- Supervise Civil Engineering processes
- Carry out necessary tests on Engineering materials
- Interpret Civil Engineering drawings
- Interpret surveyor’s measurements
- Setout Civil Engineering project
- Carry out maintenance of Civil Engineering works.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: NATIONAL DIPLOMA
Applicants with any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the National Diploma Programme by direct entry:
i. S.S.S.C or its equivalent (Teachers Grade II, NTC, WASC, G.C.E) with passes at credit level in Mathematics, Physics, a Science subject (i.e. Chemistry, Biology, or Agricultural Science), and one other subject and an ordinary pass in English Language at not more than two sittings. In addition credit or ordinary pass in any of the following subjects will be an advantage: Wood Work, Metal Work, Auto-mechanics, Basic Electronics, Basic Electricity, Technical Drawing, Fine Art;
ii. Four passes at credit level in relevant subjects as stated in (i) above obtained at the final examination of an NBTE recognised preliminary ND Programme offered in a Polytechnic or similar post-secondary technical institution provided that students admitted into the Pre-ND have a Pass in English Language.
HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMME:
The Higher National Diploma Programme in Civil Engineering Technology is aimed at producing technologists with a good mastery of engineering knowledge and skill in executing civil engineering works.
In addition to the ND objectives, the HND diplomates should be able to:
- Design simple structural elements and prepare detailed drawings of such elements with minimum supervision;
- Carry out supervision and prepare progress reports on Civil Engineering works;
- Maintain comprehensive records of work-in-progress for the parties concerned.
- Carry out accurate interpretation of technical data related to Civil Engineering works;
- Test, analyse and interpret the result of materials tested for Civil Engineering works
- Carry out engineering surveys
- Design simple transportation schemes and prepare working drawings for their construction;
- Supervise civil engineering construction works.
- Design simple water and waste water schemes and distribution networks;
- Prepare Bill of Engineering Measurements and Evaluation (BEME) and specifications for Civil Engineering works;
- Operate and maintain water works, waste water and solid waste installation and irrigation projects;
- Carry out environmental engineering and pollution control studies;
- Management of Engineering facilities with emphasis on maintenance.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA:
Applicants with all the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the Higher National Diploma programmes by direct entry:
1. The entry requirement for the National Diploma Programme.
2. National Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology with a minimum of lower credit pass; and
3. A minimum of one year Post-National Diploma cognate work experience in the field of Civil Engineering including three months of certified computer training.
