Polytechnics that Offer ND/HND Library & Information Science with their Entry Requirements
The National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Library and Information Science aims at producing the nation’s library and information science technicians who will be capable of performing middle level functions in libraries and information Centers.
On completion of this course, the diplomate will be able to carry out the following functions:
- catalogue and classify books;
- process serials and reference materials;
- compile some general and specific subject bibliographies, indexes and abstracts;
- Perform readers’ services with minimum supervision;
- supervise junior (clerical and non-technical) staff in a library; and information centers
- take charge of a school or community library efficiently and effectively;
- utilize information and communication technologies (ICT) in information handling, processing and delivering
- set up and manage a small business enterprise
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS.
Candidates for admission into the National Diploma (ND) programme should have at least five credit/merit level passes at not more than two sittings in WASC/GCE (O/L) SSCE/NTC/NBC/Teachers Grade II Certificate which must include English Language, Mathematics, and any three relevant subjects.
The entry requirement into Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Science are as follows:-
- a) All entry requirements into the ND.
- b) ND in Library and Information Science
- c) Evidence of one year mandatory IT or Two Years for holders of a Pass certificate at the ND
On completion of this course, the HND graduates will be able to carry out the following functions:
- Select, acquire and process library and information resource without or with minimum supervision
- Compile general, Subject and Analytical Bibliographies, Indexes and Abstracts.
- Effectively and efficiently use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the generation, acquisition, storage, preservation and dissemination of textual, graphic, numeric and pictorial information to meet the different information need of users
- Supervise subordinate staff (clerical and technical) in Library and Information Centers.
- Effectively manage medium-size libraries and information centers.
Programme Duration:
The National Diploma/Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Library and Information Science is structured to run for two academic sessions of two semesters each.
