A BRIEF HISTORY.

The Federal Polytechnic, Offa widely known as Offa poly came into existence in 1992. A presidential pronouncement confirming its establishment was made at the Palace of His Royal Highness, Olofa of Offa, by the then Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, during a state visit in 1991. The first Governing Council of the Polytechnic was put in place in the year 2000; the second in 2005; the third in 2009; while the fourth and current council, under the chairmanship of Chief Okey Ezenwa, was inaugurated in April 2013.

THE POLYTECHNIC.

The polytechnic is located in the Offa local government area of Kwara state. The polytechnic has two campuses: the main campus and the Mini campus.

The Main Campus of the Polytechnic is located about 6.5 kilometres from Offa town centre on the Offa–Ojoku Road, while the Mini Campus is located at the southern end of Offa town along the Offa–Oshogbo Road.

Federal Polytechnic Offa is one of the fastest polytechnics in Nigeria. The polytechnic is also among the top 30 best polytechnics in Nigeria with affordable tuition fees.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY.

Offa is the community hosting the polytechnic, and the community is peaceful with a low crime rate. The polytechnic community is dominated by 40% students, while the others are either indigenes or people who came for business. The common religions in the polytechnic community are Islam and Christianity. The community always bubbles during Eid celebrations.

The most common businesses in the polytechnic community are POS, farming, boutique, and commercial trading, while the most common businesses in the polytechnic are cyber café, printing, passport photography, phone charging, restaurants, etc.

THE CAMPUS.

The Federal Polytechnic Offa main campus is for full-time programmes while the mini campus is for continuing education programmes. Full-time students make use of the main campus, while part-time students make use of the mini campus for lectures and their activities.

Love Garden, Stella Hall, Adesoye Hall, Moremi Hall, 1000-capacity hall, Bursary Building, Medical/Health Center, and others are popular buildings on campus. The most populated departments in Offa Poly are mass communication, science laboratory technology, business administration, and management.

PROGRAMMES.

The Federal Polytechnic of Offa runs mainly two programmes, which are the full-time and part-time programmes. The duration for both full-time and part-time programmes is two(2) years.

FULL-TIME PROGRAMME: Full-time programmes are for students admitted through Jamb and for applicants who passed the school screening and entrance examination. Lectures start between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily for full-time students, except on public holidays. If you scored 120 and above in your UTME, you may likely be considered for a full-time programme and if you had at least 2.50 at ND level, you may likely be offered admission into a full-time programme.

PART-TIME PROGRAMME: Part-time programme at Offa Poly is similar to direct entry. The programme doesn’t require JAMB and it is just two years like the full-time programme, but the school fee is a bit higher than the full-time programme. The part-time programme has the highest number of students. School fees for part-time programme are less than #65,000 per session, depending on your department and faculty. The part-time programme is only available for the National Diploma level. Offa Poly does not run a part-time programme for HND.

OFFA POLY ADMISSION.

1. NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND): Federal Polytechnic Offa Admission is very cheap as the polytechnic does not conduct POST UTME exams for jambites. What the polytechnic does is screening of credentials, which means if you score at least 120 in your UTME and have credits in 5 subjects, including English language and mathematics, you will be offered admission. The general cut-off mark for admission consideration is 120, but departmental cut-off marks vary. To make your admission process fast, make sure you already have Federal Polytechnic Offa as your first choice because the polytechnic rarely offers admission to candidates that choose her as their second choice. ND part-time programme is direct entry, it does not require jamb.

2. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND): The polytechnic also does not conduct entrance examinations for Higher National Diploma (HND) applicants. With a minimum CGPA of 2.50, you can gain admission to the Federal Polytechnic of Offa. In addition to a 2.50 CGPA, you must have 5 credits in O’level. Mathematics and English language are required compulsory. 3.00/4.00 CGPA is an added advantage to be chosen. Candidates with a pass grade must have attained two years of industrial work experience. The Federal Polytechnic of Offa also considers candidates from other schools for admission. So if you didn’t do your ND in Fedpoffa and you wish to further your education here, the school will choose you as long as your credentials are credible.

Once you apply for admission, just be hopeful that your name will come up on the admission list. If you didn’t obtain your National Diploma result from the Federal Polytechnic of Offa, just make sure that you forward your transcripts on time as that is a prerequisite to being given admission. Federal Polytechnic Offa will offer you admission with a 2.00 CGPA, but you must present evidence of two years of industrial training.

In addition to 1 and 2 above, you will be required to present your O’level and Jamb results for the ND full-time programme and your O’level and ND results for the HND programme. Other requirements needed are your birthday certificate, secondary school certificate, original O’level and JMB results, ND results, passport photographs etc.

Make certain that you enter the correct information during the registration process. Do not abbreviate or omit your names and numbers. For instance, if your name is John Paul, make sure you enter “John Paul” during your registration and not “Paul John.” A single mistake can cause disqualification since the school only screens credentials for admission processing. Make sure your name, date of birth, registration number, and other information are entered correctly.

OFFA POLY SCHOOL FEES.

Federal Polytechnic Offa school fees are affordable. Full-time students pay less than #40,000 per session for their first year and less than #30,000 per session for their second year. Part-time students pay less than #65,000 per session, depending on faculty and department. Acceptance fee costs #22,000 only, and the other fees students pay are SUG dues, faculty and departmental dues. Textbooks and handouts are sold for #800 and above. Semester results are always released online. That is, only you can know your academic performance. Handouts are made compulsory at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, although not in all departments, but that’s not new in Nigeria’s education system.

ACCOMMODATION.

(a) SCHOOL HOSTELS: Federal Polytechnic Offa has hostels located at both campuses. The names of the school hostels are: new boys’ hostel, old boys’ hostel, and girls’ hostel, among the rest. The school hostels are always lively and fun, which means you will always enjoy your stay there if you can’t afford accommodation off-campus.

(b) OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION: Off-campus accommodation refers to hostels and lodges located outside of the school, i.e., hostels and lodges located within Offa. Some single rooms cost #25,000 per year or more, and self-contained range from #60,000 and above per year. It all depends on location and proximity to the campus. If you can’t afford accommodation off-campus, you can also seek admission into the school hostels. This costs just #15,000 per bed space. The names of the popular hostels inside the school are: the old boys’ hostel, the new boys’ hostel, and the girls’ hostel. However, if you want to seek admission off-campus, we encourage you to choose locations like Abuja Gate, Amuyo, Liberation, Itafa, etc., as these are the places that Offa Poly students dominate the most.
