Parents are those who brought you into this life and possibly contributed to who you are today. Our parents are part of our lives because, without them and God, we could not have been where we are today, so appreciating them (your parents) is very necessary. It is so unfortunate that people now celebrate the dead rather than the living. It is better to celebrate your parents now that they are still alive because a time will come that you will wish for, but they’re gone forever.
Parents are always ready to take responsibility for their children, even at the expense of their own lives. They prefer to be hungry rather than watch their child starve; they prefer to borrow rather than watch you drop out of school. They try everything possible to put a smile on your face. The joy of every parent is to reap the fruit of their labor someday.
There are different types of parents, but let me just categorize parents into 3 types.
(A) SINGLE PARENT: This is the type of parenting whereby a child is brought up and trained by either the father or mother only, or probably by a guardian. The parent alone, himself or herself, sponsors the child’s education and takes responsibility.
(B.) SUPPORTING PARENTS: These are the types of parents that support their child from nobody to somebody; they would do all it takes to see that their son or daughter become somebody in life, even at the expense of their own life; sometimes our parents prefer not to eat just for us to eat; they starve and overwork just to see that we are somebody in life.

(C.) NON-SUPPORTING PARENTS: These are the types of parents who don’t have the capacity to support their child or who are not ready to take responsibility. In this case, you may be the one sponsoring yourself, maybe due to financial issues or because the parents are separated. In another way, non-supporting parents might not support their child’s dreams or nurture the child to become somebody in life due to reasons best known to them.
Whichever category of parenting you fall into, appreciating your parents is very important. Unfortunately, youths these days abandon their parents as they focus on their own family only, which is very wrong and bad. How can one take care of his or her parents and make them happy?
1. APPRECIATE YOUR PARENTS.
Parents are always excited when you praise them for what they’ve done for you. This always makes them want to support you the most in every aspect of life. When was the last time you appreciated your dad? When was the last time you said “thank you” to your mom for the little she has done for you? Parenthood is not easy, which is why you should do everything possible to appreciate them because, after God, our parents are next.
2. SPEND QUALITY TIME TOGETHER.
Try to spend as much time as you can with your parents, as doing so will make them happy. Perhaps when they finally pass away, the memories will always be there and make you feel good. Even when you have your own family, remember that you are also someone’s child. If you don’t have time, you can visit them on weekends or during holidays.
3. CALL THEM.
When distance becomes a barrier for you to visit your parents, technology has made life easier for us, so you can just call them and say hello to know how well they are doing. Never ignore or abandon your parents; make sure you talk to them from time to time. Doing this will make them happy, and they will also see you as a caring child.
(4.) ASSIST THEM FINANCIALLY.
Don’t wait until they call you for help before you assist them. If you have the money, then assist them financially. Some people have abandoned their parents in the village in the belief that their father and mother are witches and wizards. If your mother was a witch, she could have killed you when you were a child. Support them financially; it doesn’t have to be something big. Trust me, this is one of the best ways to take care of your parents and make them happy.
5. TELL THEM, “I LOVE YOU.”
When did you last tell your parents, “I love you?” Most people don’t do this, as they only show love when their parents give up the ghost. So don’t wait until your parents die and start expressing how much they mean to you at their burial. Tell them all these while they are still alive, because a time will come when you wish you could do this but they’ll be gone forever. Telling your parents “I love you” is evidence you care about them, and this will definitely make them happy and proud of you.
6. BUY THEM GIFTS.
Apart from assisting your parents financially when the need arises, you can as well buy them gifts on special occasions like birthdays, Christmas, and New Year’s, and during Ramadan or Eid celebrations. Parents are always excited, and they feel different when their child buys them gifts. It doesn’t have to be an expensive gift; just about anything you can afford will put a smile on their face.

7. BE PROUD OF YOUR PARENTS.
No matter what the circumstances are, your parents will always be your parents, and there is nothing you can do to change that fact. If your parents were poor or rich, that doesn’t matter as long as they supported you in achieving your dreams; you should be proud of them. Some people are in the habit of denying their parents, and they feel ashamed to associate with their parents, which is very bad. Denying your parents will cause them sadness, so if you want to make your parents happy, then you should be proud of them.
8. LISTEN TO THEIR ADVICE.
Parents are sometimes overly protective, and they will always try to give you advice, even when you already have your own family. Although you sometimes don’t want to do what they say, you should listen to them whenever they give you advice, and show them that you truly appreciate it.

9. LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES.
Another way to make your parents happy is to right their wrongs by ensuring that you don’t make the same mistakes they made during their earlier stage of life. Learn from their mistakes and ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself on you. For instance, if your mother married out of wedlock, you should learn from her mistake and make sure that such doesn’t repeat itself. This will make them happy, and they will be proud of you.
10. RESPECT YOUR PARENTS.
After God, your parents are next in your life; you must respect and honor them. If you want to live longer, respect your parents and never disobey them. Parents can be annoying at times because they might treat you like a kid even when you are an adult, which is normal, but that should not be a reason for you to disrespect them.
