Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Supports Welding Students with Monthly Stipends and Scholarship for Lone Female Student

Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has introduced a monthly stipend scheme for students in its Department of Welding and Fabrication, as part of efforts to recognize their growing contribution to industrial production and practical engineering solutions within Abia State. The initiative is also designed to promote vocational education, technical skills development, and youth empowerment in Nigeria’s growing manufacturing and fabrication sector.

In addition to the stipend program, the institution awarded a scholarship to the department’s only female student, reinforcing its commitment to gender inclusion in technical and engineering education. This move highlights the Polytechnic’s broader strategy to encourage more women to pursue careers in welding, fabrication, and other high-demand technical fields traditionally dominated by men.

The Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, announced the development during the institution’s monthly Academic Board meeting held at the Polytechnic auditorium. He explained that the Welding and Fabrication Department has evolved beyond classroom-based learning into a productive hub contributing directly to industrial and commercial outputs across Abia State.

According to him, students are actively involved in large-scale fabrication projects that serve both public and private sectors. These projects not only enhance hands-on training but also position the institution as a key player in practical technical education and industrial skills development in Nigeria.

He further disclosed that waste bins produced by the department are currently being distributed across all 17 local government areas in Abia State. In addition, iron doors fabricated by students are already in use in various government infrastructure projects, demonstrating the quality and reliability of their work.

The Rector also highlighted the department’s expansion into agro-processing and industrial machinery fabrication. Among the equipment produced are cassava processing machines, garri production units, oil processing machines, and other agricultural equipment designed to support small and medium-scale enterprises. These machines are increasingly being purchased by entrepreneurs, farmers, and business owners across the state, contributing to local economic growth and job creation.

Other fabricated equipment includes kernel crackers and separators, fibre separators, hammer mills, cabinet dryers, block moulding machines, corn shelling machines, feed mixers, boilers, and oil press machines. This wide range of production underscores the department’s role in supporting agribusiness development, mechanized farming, and industrialization in Nigeria.

Dr. Kalu noted that the introduction of monthly stipends is aimed at motivating students and strengthening their participation in practical production activities. He emphasized that the Polytechnic is focused on bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world industrial application, ensuring graduates are job-ready and capable of starting their own enterprises.

He also expressed the institution’s long-term vision of transforming the Polytechnic into a centre of excellence for welding, fabrication, and technical innovation in West Africa. This includes expanding infrastructure, improving equipment availability, and increasing collaboration with government agencies and private sector organizations.

Speaking during an interaction with journalists, a senior fabricator in the department, Mr. Udodirim, listed several of the machines currently produced for commercial use. These include cassava grinding machines, oil press machines, feed mixers, boilers, hammer mills, block moulding machines, and agricultural processing equipment. He noted that the department has become a reliable source of affordable machinery for small businesses and agro-based industries.

The Chief Fabricator of the institution, Engr. Clement, attributed the department’s transformation to the leadership of the Rector, stating that the department was previously inactive but has now become highly productive and operational on a near round-the-clock basis.

According to him, the introduction of new fabrication projects has significantly improved student engagement and technical exposure. He added that the department has successfully executed several projects, including waste bin production for statewide distribution, TETFund-supported fabrication projects, and various agro-machinery manufacturing initiatives.

Engr. Clement also revealed that the Rector mandated the department to fabricate several facilities and equipment used within the institution, including seating arrangements for the new theatre hall and structures at the permanent site. He described this policy as a major driver of local content development and skill utilization among students.

An ND II student of the department, Nwosu Chibuisi, expressed appreciation to TETFund and the Polytechnic management for creating opportunities that allow students to earn while learning. He noted that the practical exposure has significantly improved their technical competence and readiness for employment or entrepreneurship after graduation.

The development at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s education sector toward skill-based learning, vocational training, and industrial collaboration. With increasing demand for technical skills in construction, agriculture, and manufacturing, institutions like this are playing a critical role in reducing unemployment and promoting sustainable economic development.
