Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Secures Full Accreditation, Boosts Academic and Infrastructural Growth

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has applauded Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic for successfully regaining full accreditation for all 33 of its academic programmes, including the introduction of digital accreditation.
Governor Otti made the announcement during his monthly media chat on Thursday evening, describing the development as a major milestone for the institution after years of struggling with lost accreditations. He commended the Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Kalu Okoro, for his outstanding leadership and dedication, noting that his efforts were instrumental in transforming the polytechnic into a model of excellence.
“I’m delighted to announce that Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic has secured full accreditation for its 33 courses, including digital accreditation. This achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of the Rector and his team,” Otti said.
Digital Transformation and New Facilities
Under Dr. Okoro’s administration, the polytechnic has experienced sweeping reforms, from infrastructural upgrades to academic innovations and a stronger focus on student-centered learning. One of the most remarkable achievements is the introduction of online certification for graduates, making academic credential verification faster and more reliable across Nigeria and beyond.
The institution has also expanded its facilities with a new sports complex, indoor games arena, gym, and creative studio house, enriching student life and promoting all-round development. In addition, a ₦2 billion TETFund special intervention grant has been secured to support ongoing infrastructure projects and academic advancements.
“We are equipping young people to become wealth creators, not just job seekers. Our programs are designed to provide graduates with the skills and resources they need to thrive in today’s economy,” the Governor added.
Export Growth Lab and Global Opportunities
Further enhancing the school’s profile, the Abia State Government has established an Export Growth Lab within the polytechnic. This initiative is designed to foster global research collaborations, technology development, and enterprise growth, positioning the institution as a hub for innovation and international partnerships.
“This lab will connect our students and graduates to global markets and best practices, preparing them for opportunities beyond Nigeria,” Otti explained.
Broader Statewide Achievements
While celebrating the polytechnic’s success, Governor Otti also highlighted progress across key sectors in Abia State.
- Healthcare: The administration has upgraded hospitals and clinics, improved access to essential medicines, and launched new maternal and child health programs aimed at reducing mortality rates.
- Infrastructure: Major road construction and rehabilitation projects have been completed or are ongoing, easing transportation challenges and stimulating economic activity.
- Youth Empowerment: Skills acquisition programs, entrepreneurship support, and job creation schemes are equipping young people with practical tools for economic independence.
Governor Otti emphasized that these initiatives reflect his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainable development. He expressed gratitude to the people of Abia State for their continuous support and promised to keep working tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all residents.
The transformation of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic stands as a clear example of how targeted investments in education and infrastructure can restore confidence in technical and vocational training while shaping a brighter future for the next generation.
