NOTSUP Pushes for 100% Salary Increase, Polytechnic Sector Reforms in Fresh Meeting with FG

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NOTSUP) has announced the outcome of its second renegotiation meeting with the Federal Government, held on 10 April 2026, as discussions continue over the future of Nigeria’s polytechnic sector.
In a statement released by the union’s National Secretariat, the meeting was described as constructive, with major attention given to staff welfare, career progression, infrastructure, pension reforms, and increased government funding for polytechnics across the country.
According to the union, one of the major demands presented during the meeting is a 100 percent upward review of salaries under the CONTEDISS structure, citing the harsh economic realities currently facing workers.
NOTSUP also called for the urgent finalization and implementation of the schemes and conditions of service by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Federal Ministry of Education.
Another major issue raised was career progression for non-teaching staff, especially officers in the Registry, Library, Bursary, and Technical cadres. The union demanded a clear advancement pathway up to CONTIDESS 15.
In a significant move aimed at strengthening the sector, the union proposed the establishment of a National Commission for Polytechnics (NCP) as an autonomous regulatory body, with its headquarters to be located in Abuja.
The meeting also addressed the long-standing concerns of Higher National Diploma (HND) holders, with NOTSUP demanding the removal of career stagnation for HND staff. The union proposed that affected staff should enter service at CONTEDISS 9/1 and progress up to Grade Level 17.
On staff welfare, the union called for the immediate payment of CONTISS 15 arrears dating back to 2010 for eligible officers on CONTEDISS 11 and below.
NOTSUP further demanded that officers on CONTEDISS 15 should retire with their full terminal salary, while also calling for reforms in pension death benefits to ensure that next-of-kin claims are processed within 60 days.
The union also pressed for improved training and development opportunities, recommending a 50:50 TETFund allocation between teaching and non-teaching staff.
In terms of infrastructure, NOTSUP urged the Federal Government to invest in modern laboratories, workshops, and studios, noting that these facilities are critical to effective technical education and national manpower development.
Additionally, the union requested the restoration of Federal Polytechnic Staff Schools, payment of peculiar earned allowances amounting to 50 percent of basic salary, and a 500 percent increase in recurrent and overhead funding for federal polytechnics.
The statement was signed by the Assistant General Secretary of NOTSUP and dated 11 April 2026.
