How to Communicate Effectively with Your Partner

How to Communicate Effectively with Your Partner

Communication is the key to any relationship as it increases intimacy and bonding. Effective communication will also make you understand each other better and love your partner more. When the communication in your relationship is poor, such a relationship may not last, thus effective communication is a vital component for every healthy relationship.

Communication isn’t just about sharing how your day went or what you had for dinner. It’s about digging deep and getting to know each other better.

Communication is not always easy, and many couples struggle with it. In this article, we will discuss some tips on how to communicate effectively with your partner.

1. LISTEN ATTENTIVELY.

Listening to your partner and supporting their point of view is one of the ways to communicate effectively in a relationship. If both of you can listen to each other, there are higher chances that you will understand each other. Listen attentively to what your partner has to say and react accordingly. The key to effective communication is actually not verbal communication at all, but how we listen to our partner.

When your partner is talking, give them your full attention. Avoid interrupting or planning your response while they are still speaking. Show that you are listening by nodding, maintaining eye contact, and summarizing what they said to ensure you understand their point.

2. IDENTIFY YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE.

Everyone has a way of communicating with their partner, and identifying the ones that work best for you could make your communication with your partner more effective. For example, your partner could decide not to call you for some days, and if that happens, that means something is wrong somewhere, so s/he is expecting you to reach out to them and ask why, while some people prefer to talk about it.

What communication style do you like best, offline or online? showing signals or talking? You probably know the communication style you prefer, but what about your partner? Identify it. If there is miscommunication, you will lose the opportunity to build trust and intimacy.
