FUOYE Receives N1 Billion Federal Grant for Agricultural Development as 131 Students Graduate with First Class

The Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) has been awarded N1 billion by the Federal Government to advance agricultural production, university infrastructure, and mechanized farming programs. The initiative is part of a broader federal plan allocating a total of N30 billion to support agricultural universities across Nigeria, aiming to boost food security, modernize farming practices, and enhance local community engagement.
Vice Chancellor Professor Abayomi Fasina announced the funding during a press briefing marking FUOYE’s 10th convocation ceremony. He explained that the grant would enable the university to implement mechanized farming and livestock projects that directly benefit students and surrounding communities.
Prof. Fasina also highlighted that several academic staff have secured research grants exceeding N430 million, while additional funding programs totaling over $55,000 have been attracted to support academic research at the university.
The convocation celebrated a total of 7,396 graduating students, including 131 first-class graduates, 2,519 second-class lower, and 3,777 third-class graduates.
On infrastructure, Prof. Fasina emphasized the university’s progress under the Blue Roof Legacy, noting that over 160 infrastructural projects have been completed across FUOYE campuses. The university has also expanded its faculties from eight to 18 and increased academic programs from 73 to 91, all with full or interim accreditation.
FUOYE has emerged as the fourth most subscribed university in Nigeria and achieved significant recognition in global rankings, including the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, World University Rankings by Subject, and Sub-Saharan Africa rankings.
In recognition of outstanding contributions, the university introduced an Emeritus Professors policy, honoring former Vice Chancellors over the age of 70, including Professors Chinedu Nebo, Isaac Asuzu, and Kayode Soremekun. The policy preserves institutional memory and encourages continued intellectual engagement.
Additionally, the university’s Diaspora Professors Programme will see distinguished international scholars contribute to teaching, research, and collaborative scholarship. Notable incoming professors include Prof. Hartmut Herrmann and Prof. Khaneh Wadinga Fomba of the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, Germany, strengthening FUOYE’s global research collaborations.
