UI Ranked Best University in Nigeria in Times Higher Education World Rankings 2026

The University of Ibadan has emerged as the highest-ranked university in Nigeria in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, reaffirming its position as the country’s leading institution in global academic assessment.
According to the rankings released on the official Times Higher Education platform, the University of Ibadan was placed in the 801–1000 global band, making it the top-performing Nigerian university in the 2026 edition. The achievement marks the institution’s return to the number one spot in Nigeria, a position it last held in 2023.
The 2026 rankings evaluated 2,191 universities across 115 countries using 18 performance indicators grouped into five major categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook. The assessment drew from more than 174.9 million citations from 18.7 million research publications, alongside survey responses from over 108,000 scholars worldwide.
The University of Ibadan climbed from fourth position nationally in the 2025 rankings to reclaim the top spot, displacing Covenant University, which had led Nigerian institutions in the previous two editions.
The University of Lagos secured second place in Nigeria and was the only other Nigerian university to feature in the global top 1000, also ranking within the 801–1000 category.
Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, and Landmark University were placed in the 1001–1200 global band, reflecting steady performance but falling short of the top tier.
Performance data showed that the University of Lagos recorded the highest research quality score among Nigerian universities with a score of 66.7. Bayero University Kano stood out for its strong international outlook, while Covenant University ranked highest nationally for industry engagement due to its collaboration with the private sector.
Several other Nigerian institutions were ranked in the 1201–1500 global band, including Ahmadu Bello University, the Federal University of Technology Minna, the University of Ilorin, the University of Jos, and the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
A larger number of universities appeared in the 1501+ category, highlighting ongoing challenges in global competitiveness despite inclusion in the rankings.
In total, 51 Nigerian universities were featured in the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings. However, only the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos made it into the global top 1000. Fourteen institutions were listed in the 1501+ category, while 27 universities that submitted data were not ranked.
At the global level, the University of Oxford retained the number one position for the tenth consecutive year, supported by a strong research environment score. Princeton University rose to joint third place, achieving its best-ever performance. China recorded five universities in the top 40, up from three in the previous year, while Hong Kong secured a record six institutions in the top 200. India also recorded the second-highest number of ranked universities for the first time, behind only the United States.
The latest rankings underscore the growing visibility of Nigerian universities on the global stage, while also highlighting the need for continued investment in research quality, teaching standards, industry collaboration, and international partnerships to improve overall competitiveness.
