FG Confirms Flexible Subject Choices in Revised Senior Secondary Curriculum, Including Digital Technology and Trade Courses

The Federal Ministry of Education has issued clear guidance to address widespread questions from students, parents, and school authorities regarding subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum.
In a statement released in Abuja, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, confirmed that the clarification follows numerous public inquiries and misinterpretations circulating on various platforms.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, emphasized that no approved subject has been restricted or excluded. Students are free to select any subject within the Senior Secondary School Curriculum, provided the choices are guided by school authorities, parents, or certified school counselors.
The curriculum is designed to be flexible and student-centered, allowing science students to select subjects traditionally classified under social sciences or arts, and vice versa. This approach supports diverse academic interests and career pathways.
Dr. Alausa also clarified that Information and Communication Technology has been renamed Digital Technology. The change is purely nominal and does not affect the curriculum content. Students who previously offered ICT are eligible to register and sit for Digital Technology in examinations.
Regarding trade subjects, six have been officially approved under the curriculum. Students may register for any trade subject offered by their school, but there is no obligation for those not exposed to these courses to select one.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to a smooth, inclusive, and well-guided implementation of the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum nationwide, ensuring students are fully supported in their academic and career development.
