Fedpoly Ilaro Tackles National at International Conference

The International Conference of the School of Communication and Information Technology at the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro commenced today, focusing on the theme “Technology and Communication for National Security.”
In his welcome address, Dr. J. I. Orija, Dean of the School of Communication and Information Technology, highlighted the theme’s significance given the prevailing insecurity challenges worldwide, particularly in Nigeria.
He urged participants, both virtual and physical, to present diverse perspectives on national security and suggest practical solutions.
Declaring the conference open, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Dr. Akinde, Mukail Aremu FCA, FCIT, emphasized the timeliness and critical nature of the topic, noting its global relevance.
He praised the conference committee for selecting Prof. Steven M. Mutula, a distinguished scholar in Information Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa as the keynote speaker, thereby giving the conference an international dimension.
Dr. Akinde stressed the importance of leveraging on modern technology and specialized communication skills to address the current security challenges, particularly in Nigeria.
He called on all participants to prioritize security in their discussions and use the knowledge gained to contribute to a safer and more secure world.
The Rector underscored that a collective effort at the conference could chart a workable course for the country, attracting investment since security is essential for economic stability.
Dr. Mrs. T. A. Adegbite, the Conference Committee Chairperson, reiterated that technology and communication are crucial to all aspects of national security.
The opening ceremony featured seasoned speakers, including:
Keynote Speaker: Prof. Steven M. Mutula, Professor of Information Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Paper titled: “Ethical Dimension of Technology and Communication for National Security: Using AI in an African Context.”
1st Lead Paper Presenter: Prof. Yemisi Babatola, Babcock University, Nigeria. Paper titled: “Curbing Insecurity in Nigeria: The Role of ICT.”
2nd Lead Paper Presenter: Dr. Charles Ayoade Oni, Chief Lecturer, Department of Mass Communication, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Nigeria. Paper titled: “Harnessing Communication Technologies for Development and Human Security.”
The ceremony was well attended by principal officers of the institution, including Dr. C.B. Iron Idoro, Deputy Rector Academics, and the pioneer Dean of the School of Information and Communication Technology; Mrs. A. F. Babatola FCBAN, Registrar; Dr. B. C. Atulomah, the Polytechnic Librarian, ablyvrepresented by Mrs. A. C. Olumomi
Deans of Schools present included Mr. O. M. Makanjuola, (SPAS), Engr. Dr. S. A. Adegbenro, (SE) and QS J. A. B. Awolesi, (SES). The ASUP Chairman of the institution, Dr. Taiwo Akeem and Heads, staff and students of various departments were also in attendance.
