Everything You Need to Know About Kaduna Polytechnic (KADPOLY)

The Northern Nigeria Executive Council, at its meeting of August 17, 1962, Conclusion No. 1, re-designated the Technical Institute, Kaduna, as the Polytechnic, Kaduna. It became Kaduna Polytechnic in 1968 by Federal Government Decree No. 20 of 1968, which was revised in 1979 by Decree No. 79. In 1991, the institution was taken over by the Federal Government under Decree No. 40 of the same year. The institution was established with the objective of providing diverse instruction, training, and research in technology, the sciences, commerce, the humanities, and programs of in-service instruction for members of the public service in Nigeria.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY 

Kaduna is dominated mostly by the Hausa Fulani tribe, among others, and the polytechnic community was peaceful at the time this article was published on POLYTV. Some of the popular businesses you will find in Kaduna are restaurants, fruit sellers, hotels, markets, and car washes. Inside Kaduna Polytechnic, there are POS businesses, cyber café, passport photographers, computer operators, and many other businesses on and off campus. Kaduna Polytechnic is also referred to as the “largest polytechnic in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

KADPOLY PROGRAMS:

Kaduna Polytechnic offers about 7 academic programs ranging from NCE, regular, evening, weekend, ODFEL, and others. The major programs are

1. Regular.

The regular program is a full-time program available for both ND and HND. Lectures are held on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the regular program is strictly by JAMB. The minimum requirement is 120 in UTME.

2. Evening program.

The evening program is almost the same as the regular one, as students receive lectures in the afternoon and evening. The students offer the same courses as regular students, and they take the same examination. The difference between the regular and evening programs is school fees and class allocation. The evening program is available for National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels, and the duration of this program is 4 semesters. Lectures are held between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

3. ODFEL (Open Distance and Flexible e-Learning)

The ODFEL program, as the name implies, is for working-class students. If you are a worker or into business with tight schedules and are willing to learn, then the Kadpoly ODFEL is the best option for you. The open-distance, flexible e-learning by Kaduna Polytechnic allows you to study at your convenience and obtain the same ND and HND certificates. The courses offered through the ODFEL programs are Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, Mass Communication and Public Administration.

4. SPRS (School of Preliminary and Remedial Studies)/IJMB:

This is a 12-month program; after the completion of the program, you’ll write the final exams, which will enable you to join any university of your choice or join NDII students direct at the same Kaduna Polytechnic.

5. NCE.

Nigeria Certificate Education (NCE) is a 3-year program for students who want to become teachers in their career path. Graduates of NCE can work as teachers in primary or secondary schools, depending on their level of training. Kaduna Polytechnic offers this program both in its regular and evening programs.

6. Degee and PGD.

Kaduna Polytechnic also offers undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma programs in affiliation with ABU Zaria and FUTMINNA. The degree programs are 3 years for ND graduates and 5 years for UTME 100 level, while the postgraduate diploma program is 2 years.

7. Part-time (weekend) program.

This program is strictly for the working class category, as lectures are held on Fridays and Saturdays, and this weekend program is available at the HND level only. According to the school management, candidates must be of the age of 28 and above before they can apply for the weekend program. The duration of this program is six (6) semesters. Lectures start at 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

KADUNA POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL FEES

Kaduna Polytechnic still remains one of the most affordable tertiary institutions in Nigeria, as students pay less than 55k per session.

  • NDI: #51,500
  • NDII: #45,000
  • HNDI: #52,000
  • HNDII: #43,500

Evening programs pay #65,000 for the first year and #60,000 for the second year; however, these fees are not specific as they vary every academic session. Apart from school fees, other fees that students pay include acceptance fees of #11,000. Faculty, departmental,and medical fees are about 6–10k in total.

KADPOLY CAMPUSES. 

Kaduna Polytechnic operates on four campuses: the Unguwan Rimi campus, where students in the school of business receive their lectures; the Sabon Tasha campus, where students in the school of social science receive lectures; the Tudun Wada campus, where engineering, science, and technology students receive lectures; and the Barnawa campus, where environmental students receive lectures. These campuses are far from each other.

ADMISSION INTO KADUNA POLYTECHNIC

Admission to Kaduna Polytechnic, both the National Diploma and the Higher National Diploma, is strictly by qualifications. The school doesn’t conduct POST-UTME exams for aspirants; they offer admission to candidates based on their O’level results and UTME results.

The cutoff mark for the National Diploma (ND) full-time program is 120 and above, 100 and above for NCE, and 180 and above for Bsc in UTME.

180 and above for B.Ed. (Tech) and NCE at Merit Level for Direct Entry (200 level) programs in affiliation with the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

180 and above for B.Sc. (100 level) and ND at Upper Credit Level for Direct Entry (200 level) in affiliation with Ahmadu Bello University, Zari, in either Architecture, Building, Urban/Regional Planning, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and others.

For the HND Program, applicants must possess a minimum of a lower credit in their National Diploma program in addition to a minimum of 5 credits in relevant subjects at O’level. English language and mathematics are compulsory for all courses at not more than two sittings. The school also considers CGPA below 2.50 for HND admission with evidence of two years cognate work experience.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES 

Kaduna Polytechnic is the oldest polytechnic in Nigeria, and the institution is one of the largest and most populated. Although their programs and academic calendar are kind of slow, they’re trying their best. Students can check their semester results online, and payment of school fees is performed online as well. The school has a student union, and they’re performing their functions as they are supposed to.

The school has a microfinance bank situated inside the school for the payment of levies and dues. Some of the popular departments in Kaduna Polytechnic are science laboratory technology, accountancy, business administration, computer science, and office technology management, among others. The school environment is peaceful, and academic activities are running smoothly as of the time this article was published.

Aside from the Kaduna Polytechnic microfinance bank, there are no other banks operating inside the school; however, there are many other banks off-campus at Kaduna Central Market, and most of the banks are located there.

KADPOLY HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION 

Kaduna Polytechnic has its own hostel to accommodate students, and the cost is about 15k per session. There is a steady power and water supply for students in the school hostel. Although the school has some basic rules that every student living in the hostel must abide by,

Kaduna Polytechnic is very large, and they have four(4) campuses for different faculties at different locations, so accommodation varies by location. Accommodation off-campus ranges from #50,000 and above per year, depending on the location you want.

SCHOOLS AND DEPARTMENTS

Kaduna Polytechnic has six faculties and over 30 departments at different locations. The college of Business and Management Studies is located at Unguwan Rimi; the college of Administrative Studies and Social Sciences is located at Sabon Tasha; the college of Engineering is located at Tudun Wada; the college of Environmental Studies is located at Barnawa; the college of Science and Technology is located at Tudun Wada; and the college of Technical and Vocational Education is located at the main campus.
