A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE POLYTECHNIC.

The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, which was formerly known and addressed as “The Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo”, was established in 1979, while it commenced activities in January 1980. The primary mandate of the institution as conceived by the Ondo State Government, being its proprietor, still remains to provide middle-level manpower in science and technology-related fields of study as part of efforts aimed at the effective development of technology in Ondo State in particular and Nigeria in general.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY.

Rufus Giwa Polytechnic is located in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The primary businesses in the community are farming, buying and selling, POS business, Okada, cyber cafe, Mimi market, restaurants, etc. Although sometimes there are reports of insecurity in the polytechnic community, POLYTV believes that no city is crime free, so the polytechnic community is peaceful as at the time of publishing this report, both academic and non-academic activities are going on smoothly in the polytechnic and the polytechnic community.

OWO POLY PROGRAMMES.

Rufus Giwa Polytechnic runs two programmes, which are the full-time and part-time programmes.

1. FULL-TIME PROGRAMME: This is a programme for students who were admitted through Jamb, that is, applicants that successfully met the institution’s cut-off mark and passed the school’s post-UTME examination. Full-time programme is two(2) years for both the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND).

2. PART-TIME PROGRAMME: A part-time programme is more or less like direct entry as the full-time programme doesn’t require JAMB. The duration for the part-time program is 2 years of 6 semesters. The challenge of the part-time program is that it is expensive compared to full-time programmes, which are very affordable.

OWO POLY ACCOMMODATION.

Accommodation in Owo poly is very cheap as the cost for bed space in the school hostel is 12k per session, while single rooms in Owo range from 25k to 50k depending on location and nearness to the campus. The school has two hostels, which are the Alphabet hostel for Ladies and the Numbers Hostel for gentlemen.

Self-contained apartments range from 70K and above. The school hostel is peaceful and conducive. However, if you do not like to share a room with anyone, you should budget at least 25k for accommodation outside the school, that is, in Owo town. If you are looking for the best place for accommodation, we recommend any of these aforementioned areas, as you will really enjoy your stay there because RUGIPO students are the ones that mostly dominate the areas.

Admission to Rufus Giwa polytechnic (Owo Poly) isn’t that difficult as candidates can gain admission to the polytechnic with or without Jamb.

OWO POLY CHALLENGES.

Insecurity and cultism are the major challenges in Rufus Giwa Polytechnic. A video obtained by POLYTV at the conclusion of the last academic session shows how some suspected cultist students signed out as they flew their colors unchallenged at the polytechnic main gate. However, the school management in February 2022 warned students and staff to desist from any unlawful gathering or rally on campus, adding that any form of unauthorized gathering or rally on campus will attract a penalty. POLYTV believes that the school management will try its best to ensure that cult activities are eradicated completely from the polytechnic as these are the major challenges of being a student in the polytechnic.
