Study Abroad: Everything You Need to Know About WES Evaluation

If you are a student hoping for international education and immigration, one of the first sstep is the credential evaluation. The World Education Services (WES) evaluation is a popular choice for verifying and assessing educational credentials from foreign institutions. If you’re in Nigeria and considering a WES evaluation, here’s everything you need to know about the process, costs, and timelines.

 What is WES Evaluation?

WES is a non-profit organization that provides credential evaluation services to assess foreign academic degrees, diplomas, and certificates. This evaluation helps educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities understand how foreign qualifications compare to those in the United States and Canada. The WES evaluation translates your academic credentials into their U.S. or Canadian equivalents, facilitating admissions, employment, or immigration processes.

Types of WES Evaluations

WES offers two main types of evaluations:

1. Document-by-Document Evaluation.

This provides a basic equivalency report, showing how each of your foreign qualifications compares to U.S. or Canadian standards.

2. Course-by-Course Evaluation.

This is more detailed and includes an evaluation of each course or subject you studied, useful for academic admissions or licensing purposes.

Which prospective student will benefit from WES evaluation?

If you have a graduating CGPA of 3.40 to 3.49 in a Nigerian University which is a second class lower for example, you will benefit immensely from doing WES. I knew someone that had 3.40/5 from a Nigerian University who did the US WES evaluation. The result of the WES evaluation was 3.09/4 which gave him the opportunity to apply to any University of his choice.

WES, short for World Education Services, evaluates your academic transcript to a country-specific equivalent. For instance, this applicant, his ND+HND, had a 3.35/4.0 cumulative GPA.
Guess what? A 3.35/4.0 CGPA (upper credit) turned into 3.71/4.0 (Distinction/First Class) after WES evaluation. This person is now in the U.S., doing a fully funded master’s program.
