Federal Polytechnic Oko Launches Fitness Programme for Newly Elected Deans, HODs

As part of efforts to promote staff wellness and improve workplace productivity, Federal Polytechnic Oko has commenced a week-long fitness programme for newly elected Deans and Heads of Departments in the institution.
The exercise began on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the institution’s Staff Sports Club and forms part of initiatives aimed at encouraging healthy living among management and academic staff members.
The programme was officially declared open by the Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, who was represented by the Deputy Rector (Academic), Dr. Nkiruka Akabuike.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Rector congratulated the newly elected Deans and Heads of Departments on their appointments and urged them to participate actively in the fitness exercise, emphasizing the importance of good health in effective leadership and service delivery.
She explained that the establishment of the Staff Sports Club is in line with her administration’s 12-point agenda, especially in the area of staff welfare and wellbeing.
Representing the Rector, Dr. Akabuike highlighted the health benefits of regular physical exercise, particularly for workers who spend long hours in offices and administrative duties.
According to her, the nature of civil service work often exposes employees to health risks associated with prolonged sitting, making physical fitness programmes necessary for maintaining an active and productive workforce.
She encouraged staff members to make adequate use of the facilities provided at the Sports Club in order to improve their physical wellbeing and sustain healthy lifestyles.
In his remarks, the Manager of the Staff Sports Club, Haruna Atiku, stated that the programme was designed to promote physical fitness, strengthen teamwork, encourage social interaction, and build cordial relationships among the newly elected academic leaders.
He commended the Rector for establishing and equipping the Sports Club with modern facilities, noting that regular exercise remains essential for healthy living and improved productivity.
Also speaking, the Head of the Department of Social Sciences, Rev. Fr. Paul Azuakor, described the initiative as beneficial and rewarding, adding that he intends to make regular use of the facility.
The week-long exercise is expected to further strengthen staff engagement while promoting a culture of wellness and healthy living within the Polytechnic community.
