Abia Polytechnic to Promote Senior Lecturers Based on Innovation, Says Rector

The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has announced that future promotions to senior academic positions will be based on innovation, patents, and measurable research impact rather than traditional academic qualifications alone.
Dr. Kalu made this known during the 3rd National Conference of the School of Science and Industrial Technology (SSIT) held at the institution on Wednesday.
Promotion to Chief Lecturer to Depend on Innovation and Patents
According to the Rector, within the next five years, any lecturer aspiring to attain the rank of Chief Lecturer must present at least two verifiable patents or impactful innovations that contribute meaningfully to national development.
He emphasized that the institution is shifting from a theory-driven academic model to a practice-oriented system that values creativity, technology, and real-world problem-solving.
“We can no longer remain in the era of endless paper writing. It is time to move beyond the comfort of theoretical research and focus on innovations that can transform our society,” Dr. Kalu said.
He stressed that Nigerian tertiary institutions must prioritize research commercialization and technological application to drive sustainable national growth.
Conference Theme Focuses on Technology and Development
The conference, themed “Leveraging Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Scientific Innovation and National Development,” was declared open under the leadership of Dr. Akuagwu Nneka Agbanyim, Dean of SSIT, and Dr. Eric Ogbonnaya, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee.
Participants from across the country gathered to discuss how emerging technologies can strengthen scientific research, innovation, and community impact.
Keynote Speakers Advocate for Indigenous Research and Creativity
In his keynote address, Dr. Chizaram A. Ogbuji, Deputy Rector (Administration), delivered a paper on “Indigenous Research and Its Relevance to Community Development.” He highlighted the importance of home-grown research that fosters inclusivity and social cohesion.
“Indigenous research should promote unity and development rather than division. Every research effort should empower people to become active contributors to their communities,” he stated.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Christopher C. Onyemenonu, Deputy Rector (Academics) and former Acting Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, encouraged participants to enhance their creative and critical thinking skills, which he described as “indispensable in the era of automation and artificial intelligence.”
Polytechnic Leadership Committed to Innovation-Driven Education
The Rector reaffirmed the institution’s mission to become a hub for technological advancement and innovation in Nigeria’s polytechnic sector. According to him, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic will continue to provide an enabling environment for students and staff to engage in meaningful research, innovation, and skill-based education.
He also commended the School of Science and Industrial Technology for organizing a conference that aligns with the Federal Government’s agenda on science, technology, and innovation (STI) as key drivers of economic development.
Looking Ahead
With this new innovation-based promotion policy, Abia Polytechnic is setting a precedent for how Nigerian polytechnics can redefine academic growth, research relevance, and institutional competitiveness. The approach is expected to encourage lecturers to develop creative solutions, produce patentable technologies, and contribute directly to industrial and societal progress.
