DAWN PROJECT DONATES 1000 TREES TO LASUSTECH

A leading environmental non-profit organisation, The Dawn Project, with the support of Green Belt Movement Nigeria, has donated 1,000 trees to the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) as the university embarked on tree planting exercise.
According to the organisation, the tree planting is part of effort to protect the damaging climate, stating that the initiative was aimed at promoting reforestation to control climate crisis.
Speaking during the 2-day exercise that commenced on Friday, October 18th, 2024, the VC explained that the trees would also help in the development of technology which the university is established for, while providing shades and ambience for conducive learning environment.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Odusanya Olumuyiwa, the exercise is necessary to protect human lives, saying about 1,000 trees would be planted across the campus.
Also speaking, the Founder, Dawn Project, Dr. Pamela Ajayi, said the purpose of the exercise was in two folds, first, to preserve the indigenous trees from going into extinction, while also serving the purpose of preserving the climate change.
Ajayi, who noted that many local trees in Nigeria have been cut, said there is need to replace them.
“That is why we are donating 1000 trees of various species to LASUSTECH. Our focus is to preserve our own heritage by replacing many of our trees which have been cut away. This will also serve as remedy to the issue of the climate change.
“Last year, we donated same amount of trees to the University of Lagos.”
Appreciating the organisation to the donation of the trees, the university registrar, Mr. David Ogungbe said the exercise would be sustained.
