Tragedy at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic: Mechanical Engineering Student Commits Suicide After Breakup

The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic community has been left in deep shock and mourning following the tragic death of a Mechanical Engineering student identified as Scott, who allegedly took his own life on Wednesday night after suffering emotional distress from a breakup.
According to reliable sources, Scott, popularly known among students as a vibrant and jovial personality, reportedly became severely depressed after his girlfriend ended their relationship. Friends close to him say he had been struggling to cope with the emotional toll, and despite subtle signs of distress, no one anticipated the extent of his despair.
Information obtained by POLY TV revealed that Scott purchased the rope he later used to hang himself and even took photos of it, which he sent to one of his friends. His final messages painted a heartbreaking picture of his mental state.
In one of his chats, he wrote:
“I’m not happy and you want me to eat, you are funny.”
“Just want to go and end everything right now.”
Shortly after sending the message, he was found lifeless, having reportedly hanged himself in his residence. The tragic news spread quickly across campus and on social media, leaving students and staff devastated.
Scott was widely known for his cheerful demeanor and was often described by classmates as “a lover boy” who had a light-hearted spirit and was easy to get along with.
The Student Union Government, faculty members, and fellow students have expressed their grief and extended condolences to his family. A candlelight procession is reportedly being planned by students in his honor.
As the school community continues to grapple with the loss, this incident has once again raised concerns about mental health awareness and emotional support systems in tertiary institutions. Students are urged to speak up, seek help, and check in on their friends regularly.
May Scott’s soul rest in peace. 🕊️
