Relief for Students as Gov. Umo Eno Approves 18 Speed Bumps, Road Signs Around Akwa Ibom Poly After SUG Intervention

Students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, can now breathe a sigh of relief as the state government has approved the installation of 18 speed bumps and new road signs around the Polytechnic community to curb frequent road accidents.
The approval came after the Students Union Government (SUG), led by the President Comrade Wisdom Udoimuk, held a joint meeting on Friday, August 22, 2025, with officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ikot Ekpene Unit Command and the Nigeria Police Force, represented by the Divisional Police Officer of Ikot Ekpene.
At the meeting, Comrade Wisdom Udoimuk thanked the FRSC and Police for granting the Union audience despite the short notice. He spoke passionately about the fears and pains of the Student body, stressing that “no parents should lose a child simply because he or she went in search of education”.
Also speaking, the Vice President, Comr. Onyii Okorie Inah passionately appealed for urgent action to safeguard students’ lives, describing the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Road as a death trap. She noted that the frequent accidents had caused untold fear and grief within the community.
“Students leave their homes each day with the hope of returning safely. That hope should never be cut short by accidents that can be prevented,” she said, urging authorities to provide pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, and clear road signs without delay.
In response, Governor Umo Bassey Eno swiftly approved the project, directing that the safety measures be completed within two weeks.
The development has been hailed as a victory for the Polytechnic community, with students expressing optimism that the move will drastically reduce road mishaps.
The SUG executives assured the students that the Union will continue to prioritize their welfare and ensure their voices are heard at all levels of governance.
