Polytechnic Students Reject Calls for Removal of Federal Polytechnic Ekowe Rector

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has expressed strong opposition to ongoing calls for the removal of Dr. Lukman Adegoke Agbabiaka, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, in Bayelsa State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ibadan over the weekend, NAPS National President, Festus Ayomide Oyewumi, commended Dr. Agbabiaka’s leadership, noting that the institution has recorded remarkable progress since his appointment.

Oyewumi highlighted several achievements under the rector’s administration, including significant improvements in academic programmes and campus infrastructure. He pointed to the restoration of NYSC and Industrial Training Fund (ITF) enrolments, the re-accreditation of existing courses, and the approval of new programmes by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

He also praised the development of ICT and Computer-Based Test (CBT) facilities, the upgrading of laboratories, and enhanced hostel accommodation for students. According to him, these initiatives have positively impacted the academic environment and improved the learning experience.

Addressing the ongoing strike action by some staff unions, Oyewumi acknowledged their right to express grievances but urged all parties to embrace constructive dialogue in the interest of institutional growth. He appealed to stakeholders, including the Polytechnic’s Governing Council, the NBTE, and the Federal Ministry of Education, to ensure any investigations into administrative issues are handled transparently and fairly.

NAPS further called for the swift resumption of academic activities, emphasizing the need for the Federal Government to support the ongoing reforms at the polytechnic. The association stressed that such support is essential to advancing polytechnic education in Nigeria.

Reaffirming its commitment to student welfare, NAPS urged continuous improvement in the institution’s management and operations, pledging to stand firmly for the progress and development of the Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe.
