Federal Polytechnic Oko Hosts Maiden International Hybrid Conference on National Branding and Economic Growth

The Department of Marketing at Federal Polytechnic Oko has successfully hosted its first International Multidisciplinary Hybrid Conference, bringing together academics, researchers, students, and industry stakeholders to discuss the role of national branding in driving economic competitiveness in a globalized world.
The conference, held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, focused on the theme, “National Branding, Marketing Reputation and Economic Competitiveness in a Globalised World.” Participants at the event emphasized the urgent need for Nigerians to promote positive values, professionalism, and excellence within their immediate environments as a pathway to rebuilding the nation’s global reputation.
Delivering the lead paper presentation, former Head of the Department of Marketing at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Ven. Prof. Anayo Dominic Nkamnebe, stated that countries with strong global reputations often enjoy higher levels of trust due to the conduct, skills, and values demonstrated by their citizens.
According to him, nation branding goes beyond advertising campaigns and public relations strategies, stressing that the true image of a nation is built through competence, integrity, innovation, and responsible citizenship. He expressed concern over the increasing rate of migration among Nigerians, describing it as a reflection of deeper socio-economic challenges facing the country.
In her keynote address, the Deputy Rector (Academic) of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr. Nkiruka Akabuike, described nation branding as a deliberate and strategic effort by countries to shape how they are perceived globally through their culture, values, institutions, and economic performance.
She noted that sustainable national brands are developed through accountable leadership, institutional credibility, economic transformation, and authentic engagement with the international community. Dr. Akabuike further urged governments and stakeholders to prioritize investment in human capital development, institutional reforms, cultural diplomacy, and digital communication in order to strengthen Nigeria’s global image and competitiveness.
The academic administrator also challenged educators, policymakers, researchers, and citizens to play active roles in shaping a country that is economically viable, internationally respected, and attractive to global investors.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the occasion and member of the institution’s 12th Governing Council, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, encouraged students to become ambassadors of positive branding by maintaining discipline, dressing responsibly, and remaining committed to their academic pursuits.
He commended the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, and the institution’s management team for promoting transparency, accountability, and zero tolerance for corruption within the school system. He also urged lecturers and staff members to continue upholding ethical standards capable of positioning the institution favorably on the global academic map.
Former Head of the Department of Marketing, Dr. Igwenazor Nchekwube, expressed appreciation to the Rector for approving and supporting the conference, noting that the initiative would further strengthen the department’s reputation among scholars and researchers across various disciplines.
