Police should please come to Our Aid — DSGP Students Cries for Help Over Rising Insecurity

The students of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, have cried out for help as insecurity worsens in the polytechnic community.

This is coming as suspected armed robbers attacked students in their hostel off-campus on Thursday night.

The students lamented that they can no longer sleep with their eyes closed, and most of the students have now abandoned their hostels for fear of being attacked by hoodlums.

One of the victims of the recent attack, an HND student who doesn’t want his name mentioned, said to POLYTV that a student was stabbed in the shoulder and other students were injured too during the attack, which lasted for hours.

“They collected our phones, money, laptops, and valuables. They beat us with a knife and threaten to kill us if we don’t cooperate with them.”

One of the victims of the robbery who spoke with POLYTV appealed to the state government and commissioner of police in Delta State to deploy their men to the polytechnic community so students could return to their hostel.

“Right now, as I’m speaking with you, some of our students have fled their hostels out of fear. Please, we want the state government to take the necessary action.”

Reacting to the issue, the management of the polytechnic has announced a One week mid semester break.  This was confirmed in a statement signed by the SUG president.

“Due to the recent cases of robberies and insecurity around Ogwashi-uku- and Azagba Ogwashi areas, the school management has declared a one week mid-semester break….

“Within this one week, the school management, SUG, the community and security agencies are to monitor and take appropriate security measures that will curb the high level of insecurity now common in student hostels in Ogwashi-uku in order to ensure the safety of students.”

“The mid-term break is with immediate effect. Academic activities will resume on Monday, February 26, 2024.”

“Students who are not travelling are advised to remain calm, restrict movement, especially at night and be security conscious.”

“The SUG will, within the weekend, visit hostels located in robbery-prone areas of Ogwashi-uku for profiling and creation of platform for effective communication and information management. The SUG considers the safety of students as its major priority.”
