Over One Million Nigerians Enrol in Federal Government’s TVET Masters Programmes

The Federal Government has announced a major milestone in its ongoing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reforms, revealing that over one million Nigerians have enrolled in the Masters 6 and 12 programmes aimed at strengthening technical education nationwide.

The initiative, implemented in partnership with UNESCO and supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea, is designed to build the capacity of TVET managers, leaders, and decision-makers to align technical education with labour market demands.

Driving Workforce Development

Speaking during a capacity-building workshop for TVET stakeholders in Kano under the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) III Project, Dr. Muyibat Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, highlighted the progress of the reform agenda.
Represented by Deputy Director Mrs. Stella Uhuegbu, Olodo revealed that verification of learners is currently underway, while more than 15,000 students are expected to resume this weekend at Federal Technical Colleges across Nigeria.

She explained that these reforms are part of the government’s broader plan to revitalize TVET, equip young Nigerians with employable skills, and ensure training programmes meet industry needs.

Transforming Technical Education

Olodo described the workshop as a strategic intervention, stating that it goes beyond regular training sessions. “The 10-week online course completed by participants has broadened their knowledge, and the practical skills gained during this in-person workshop will help produce a workforce that is not only competent but globally competitive,” she said.

She urged participants to remain committed and fully engaged, noting that their contributions will help build a more robust and responsive TVET system for Nigeria.

International Support for Skills Development

UNESCO’s Representative to Nigeria and Head of the Abuja Office, Mr. Mendy Albert, emphasized the programme’s importance in equipping young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
Represented by BEAR III Regional Coordinator Mr. Manish Josh, Albert noted that TVET remains a national priority because of its role in creating sustainable job opportunities.

According to Albert, the objectives of the BEAR III Project include strengthening strategic planning, aligning TVET programmes with labour market needs, and supporting institutions in developing training plans that promote quality and relevance.

Building a Future-Ready Workforce

Participants at the workshop were drawn from federal and state education agencies, technical institutions, and the private sector. They were encouraged to share their new knowledge with their respective organizations to strengthen the technical and vocational education landscape across the country.

With over one million Nigerians already enrolled and thousands more preparing to join, the TVET Masters programme is positioned to produce a generation of skilled professionals capable of driving economic growth and innovation.
