OGITECH Makes History with First-Ever Campus Security Workshop to Boost Student Safety

The Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, has taken a groundbreaking step toward strengthening campus safety by hosting its first-ever security workshop for personnel. The one-day training, held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Institute’s Multipurpose Hall, was themed “The Role of Security Personnel in a Safe Learning Environment in Tertiary Institutions.”

In his opening remarks, the Rector, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, urged participants to make the most of the training, describing the initiative as part of his administration’s drive to build a secure and enabling environment for learning. He noted that the workshop is a historic first in the Institute, aimed at addressing challenges and implementing strategies that guarantee peace on campus.

Deputy Rector and Chairman of the Security Committee, Dr. Oluyemi Odutola, explained that the training was carefully designed to enhance the safety of students, staff, and institutional assets. He expressed gratitude to the Governing Council, management team, and guest speakers whose contributions, he said, were vital to the growth and development of OGITECH.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Mr. Akinwande Olorunsola Obiwole, Chief Security Officer of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, outlined the role of security personnel in tertiary institutions and offered guidelines for tackling common threats. He emphasized that effective campus security requires collaboration between officers, students, staff, and law enforcement agencies.

Other guest facilitators included ACC Adegbenga Solayo of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who spoke on the role of Civil Defense personnel in campus security; a DSS officer, who addressed the importance of intelligence gathering in preventing security breaches; and Mr. Kazeem Solotan, Divisional Police Officer of Igbesa, who trained participants on handling weapons and maintaining proper protocol while on duty.

In his vote of thanks, Mr. Aminu Sulaiman, Dean of Student Affairs, commended the management and facilitators, stressing that the workshop had strengthened the capacity of OGITECH’s security team. He also praised the presence of the Institute’s principal officers, including Mrs. Sakirat Olajumoke Johnson, Acting Registrar, and Mr. Yunus Abdulsalam, Acting Bursar.

The workshop ended on a high note, with participants expressing renewed commitment to protecting lives and property on campus. The milestone event underscores OGITECH’s unwavering dedication to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for students and staff alike.
