Long Distance Relationship — Is It Worth It? Why You Should Avoid Long Distance If You’re Approaching Your 30s

Love doesn’t always come when we plan for it. Sometimes it shows up unexpectedly, and sometimes it comes from far away. In a world driven by technology, long distance relationships have become more common than ever. But the big question remains: is it really worth it—especially if you’re approaching your 30s?

This isn’t about being pessimistic or discouraging anyone from love. It’s about reality, timing, and making smart relationship decisions.

Many people don’t plan for long distance relationships, but love can come at any time, and sometimes it comes from far away. So, is it worth giving a long distance relationship a chance?

1. Long Distance Relationship Is a Big Waste of Time

If you are 25 years of age or above, you shouldn’t waste your time investing in a long distance relationship. A healthy relationship requires quality time, attention, and effective communication—many of which are often absent in long distance relationships.

If your relationship was close before the distance happened, that’s different. But starting a new relationship from scratch when you’re approaching your 30s is a big risk and can be a serious waste of time. This isn’t discouragement; these are facts.

2. Long Distance Relationship Always Involves 3–4 People

Long distance relationships test trust and loyalty. Due to the distance, many people cheat on their partners or keep backups. In reality, many long distance relationships involve three or four people.

While there are genuinely loyal and honest people, taking this risk can break your heart in the future—especially when you discover your “serious” partner has another serious partner.

3. It Costs a Lot of Money

Long distance relationships can’t survive without money. You need money for constant communication—data, airtime, and video calls. Traveling back and forth to see your partner is expensive and can drain your wallet.

Some issues are best resolved with physical presence, but distance makes simple matters more complicated.

4. Lack of Quality Time

Long distance relationships lack quality time and physical presence. Many lovers rely solely on technology such as social media and video calls to communicate, which is never enough.

A video call is not the same as physical intimacy, shared moments, or being present for each other.

5. Ghost Lover Syndrome

Being in a long distance relationship is like dating a ghost. You don’t really know them, and they don’t fully know you. You’re both surviving on hope and trust.

If they’re hiding something from you, how would you know? You can’t check their phone, and surprise visits are often impossible due to distance.

When You Should Try a Long Distance Relationship

Only consider a long distance relationship if:

  • You were already dating before the distance happened
  • The distance isn’t too far (e.g., same state but different local government)
  • Both of you are willing to put in consistent effort
  • You can meet at least once every two months

In summary, long distance relationships can be a big waste of time—especially if you’re approaching your 30s. Unless there is a high possibility of relocating to your partner’s location, it’s better to avoid it. Of course, there are long distance relationships that lead to marriage. But if you’re nearing your 30s, you can’t afford to take unnecessary risks and waste precious time.
