Lagos State University Partners with OPay for ₦1.2 Billion Scholarship Programme

Lagos State University (LASU) has officially joined the list of beneficiaries of OPay’s ₦1.2 billion 10-year scholarship initiative, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the fintech giant and the institution on Monday.
The partnership, under OPay’s “Empowering Futures” Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, aims to support academically outstanding but financially challenged students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
According to OPay, 20 LASU students will receive fully funded scholarships every year for the next decade, covering tuition and other academic needs.
Commitment to Youth Empowerment and Education
During the MoU signing ceremony, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, praised OPay for its forward-thinking contribution to education and youth development in Nigeria.
She said:
“This initiative from OPay demonstrates a true spirit of corporate responsibility and dedication to the dreams of young Nigerians. It will ease the financial pressure on many students and inspire them to achieve academic excellence.”
The Vice Chancellor also emphasized that the partnership reflects a shared vision between LASU and OPay—to empower the next generation through quality education, innovation, and technological advancement.
“Lagos State University remains committed to nurturing students who are both academically excellent and socially responsible. We appreciate OPay’s confidence in our institution and look forward to a productive collaboration,” she added.
LASU Registrar, OPay Executives Applaud the Initiative
Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, the university’s Registrar, thanked OPay for extending the scholarship to LASU students, noting that the gesture would make a long-term impact on their lives and career paths.
“This scholarship may seem like a financial intervention today, but in reality, it will change lives, empower families, and inspire a generation of young Nigerians to reach greater heights,” he said.
Representing OPay at the event, Elizabeth Wang, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, reaffirmed OPay’s commitment to investing in Nigeria’s educational growth and human capital development.
“Since our establishment in 2018, OPay’s mission has been to drive financial inclusion through technology. Beyond this, we believe education is the foundation of every strong society. That’s why OPay is sponsoring 20 LASU students annually for 10 years—to make their academic dreams easier to achieve,” Wang stated.
She also revealed OPay’s plans to set up Cyberlabs on university campuses and create graduate employment opportunities within its workforce of over 5,000 employees, further strengthening the bridge between education and industry.
