Federal Polytechnic Ukana Secures NBTE Accreditation for 21 Programmes, Expands TVET Skills Training in Akwa Ibom

The management of Federal Polytechnic Ukana in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has announced the successful accreditation of 21 academic programmes by the National Board for Technical Education, marking a major institutional milestone in quality assurance and technical education development.
The accreditation covers 19 National Diploma programmes and three Higher National Diploma programmes, reinforcing the institution’s compliance with national academic standards and regulatory benchmarks. The approval is expected to boost student enrolment, enhance graduate employability and strengthen the polytechnic’s competitive position within Nigeria’s expanding technical education sector.
The Rector, Mrs. Eduma Essien, disclosed the development while presenting her one-year stewardship report, describing the accreditation exercise as a defining achievement of the administration. She noted that securing approval for the programmes reflects deliberate academic planning, improved internal coordination and strict adherence to regulatory requirements.
In addition to programme accreditation, the polytechnic has also received approval from the National Board for Technical Education and the Federal Ministry of Education under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training initiative to operate as a certified skills training centre. The TVET-backed centre will offer practical training in fashion design, leatherwork, paint production, printing and decoration, among other vocational trades.
Education analysts say the dual approval positions the institution strategically within Nigeria’s growing skills economy, particularly at a time when demand for employable technical competencies and entrepreneurship training continues to rise.
Addressing infrastructure development, the rector explained that the institution is actively bridging facility gaps, with several projects sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund at advanced stages of completion. The ongoing upgrades are aimed at improving teaching capacity, workshop standards and research output.
As part of efforts to diversify revenue and deepen hands-on learning, the polytechnic has commenced commercial-scale production activities, including tissue paper manufacturing, furniture production, paint manufacturing and block moulding. According to the management, these ventures are designed to enhance internally generated revenue while providing students with industry-relevant practical exposure.
On the international front, the institution recorded further progress as 27 staff members benefited from TETFund-sponsored participation at an international conference in Kigali. The engagement, the rector noted, expanded research collaboration, improved global visibility and strengthened adoption of international best practices in teaching and institutional planning.
The Commissioner for Education in Akwa Ibom State, Ubong Umoh, commended the polytechnic’s leadership for accelerating infrastructural renewal and academic growth. He observed that the institution’s transformation aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s education-focused development blueprint under the ARISE Agenda.
The commissioner further encouraged students to leverage the Nigerian Education Loan Fund scheme to ease financial pressures and ensure uninterrupted academic progression.
The event, attended by management staff, academic personnel, traditional rulers and community stakeholders, also featured the commissioning of the newly established Skills Training Centre and Entrepreneurship Development Centre. Observers describe the facilities as strategic investments aimed at positioning the polytechnic as a hub for innovation, technical excellence and sustainable workforce development in Akwa Ibom State.
With expanded accreditation, strengthened vocational certification, infrastructure upgrades and growing industry-oriented production initiatives, Federal Polytechnic Ukana is emerging as a stronger player in Nigeria’s technical and vocational education landscape. Education sector stakeholders note that sustained regulatory compliance and targeted investment will be essential to maintaining momentum and delivering long-term economic impact through skilled manpower development.
