Federal Polytechnic Bauchi has made headlines with the successful conduct of its long-awaited Students’ Union Government election, ending a 22-year hiatus and restoring student democracy on campus. The landmark event, the first since 2004, is being widely celebrated as a major step toward strengthening student representation, leadership development, and campus governance in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
The election, which had been suspended for over two decades due to security concerns and disruptions linked to cult-related activities, was revived after a careful review of the institution’s academic stability and social environment. This renewed push reflects the Polytechnic’s commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive space where students can actively participate in leadership and decision-making.
Organized by the Students’ Affairs Division, the election process was conducted with a high level of transparency and credibility. Observers and participants alike praised the seamless coordination, which has set a new standard for student electoral processes in Nigerian polytechnics.
Emerging from the polls are newly elected executives tasked with representing and advancing student interests for the 2025/2026 academic session. Idris Mustapha Abubakar was elected as President, alongside Peace Sunday Nikki as Vice President and Chung Weng Dauda as Secretary General. Other key officials include Idris Sani Yunus as Treasurer, Jacob Ezekiel Ojochegbe as Financial Secretary, and Jimoh Abdullateef as Welfare Director.
Additional members of the executive team include Solomon James as Assistant Secretary General, Hassan Muhammad Kabir as Welfare Director II, Aliyu Mubarak Saeed as PRO I, and Iyanda Rhoda Oluwatoyin as PRO II. Together, they are expected to drive initiatives focused on student welfare, academic support, and stronger engagement between students and school management.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected President assured students of inclusive governance and collaboration. He emphasized a leadership style that prioritizes unity, promising to work closely with the Polytechnic management to address student concerns and improve campus life.
The Registrar of the institution, Alhaji Kasimu Salihu, who was present at the event, commended the Students’ Affairs Division for successfully organizing the election. He reiterated the management’s commitment to student welfare, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance facilities and maintain an open-door policy for dialogue and engagement.
The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Barrister Bilkisu Lami Jimoh, marking the official beginning of a new era in student leadership at the Polytechnic.
