Federal Polytechnic Ayede Kicks Off 3rd Annual Rector’s Cup as Electrical/Electronic Engineering Advances

Federal Polytechnic Ayede has officially flagged off the third edition of its Annual Rector’s Cup Football Competition for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology securing a dramatic victory over the Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in the tournament’s opening fixture.

The highly anticipated encounter, played at the Polytechnic Sports Field, ended in a goalless draw after regulation time before Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology emerged victorious with a 4-2 win in the penalty shootout to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Declaring the competition open, the Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Temilola Morufat Adepoju, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting sports as an essential part of students’ academic and personal development.

She appreciated the management of the Polytechnic for its continued support in advancing sporting activities and commended the Sports Coordinator, Mr. Bashiru Bello, for his dedication and outstanding efforts in organising the annual competition.

The Acting Rector encouraged all participating teams to uphold the values of discipline, fairness, teamwork and mutual respect throughout the tournament, emphasizing that the true essence of sports lies in healthy competition rather than the pursuit of victory alone.

She urged players to display professionalism and respect for one another on the field, noting that while only one team would eventually lift the trophy, every participant had the opportunity to demonstrate character and sportsmanship.

Following her remarks, Engr. Adepoju performed the ceremonial kick-off to officially signal the commencement of the competition.

The opening match, which began at approximately 3:20 p.m., delivered an entertaining contest as both Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology and Science Laboratory Technology created several scoring opportunities in both halves. Despite their attacking efforts, neither side managed to break the deadlock, resulting in a 0-0 scoreline at full time.

The winner was eventually decided through penalties, where Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology showed greater composure by converting four spot kicks, while Science Laboratory Technology scored two, handing the former a 4-2 triumph and progression to the next stage of the competition.

The opening ceremony attracted several principal officers of the institution, including the Registrar, Mr. Akinlolu Akinpade; the Bursar, Mr. Muftau Alao; the Acting Polytechnic Librarian, Mr. Dare Samuel Adeleke; Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, members of staff, and students, all of whom witnessed the official commencement of the annual football tournament.

The Rector’s Cup remains one of the Polytechnic’s major sporting events, providing students with an avenue to showcase their football talents, promote unity among departments, and foster teamwork, discipline and healthy competition within the campus community.
