Canada Hiring 32,000 Workers for 2026 Census, Earn Up to $31.32 Per Hour as Enumerator or Crew Leader

Canada is set to recruit approximately 32,000 temporary workers across all provinces and territories to support the upcoming 2026 Census, with hourly pay rates of up to $31.32 depending on the role. The Census, scheduled for May 2026, aims to provide an accurate statistical overview of the country, supporting key decisions in healthcare, education, housing, transportation, and other essential services.
The recruitment is open to adults who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, as well as those holding valid work permits and residing in Canada with a Canadian home address. Applicants will be considered for both supervisory and non-supervisory roles, with work schedules and employment periods varying by position and location. Most roles involve direct, in-person engagement with households, often during evenings and weekends.
Available positions include Crew Leaders, Crew Leader Assistants, Field Operations Supervisor Assistants, Collection Support Unit Operators, and Enumerators. The majority of hires are expected to be Crew Leaders and Enumerators, making these roles the most accessible for applicants.
Enumerator Roles and Pay
Enumerators are responsible for collecting Census data by visiting households, following up on non-responses, and engaging directly with residents. Work hours typically range from 20 to 40 hours per week between May and July 2026. Crew Leaders, who supervise enumerators, coordinate field operations, and manage administrative tasks, usually work around 40 hours per week from March to July 2026.
Hourly pay for these positions is competitive. Enumerators earn $25.87 per hour, while Crew Leaders receive up to $31.32 per hour. Employees may also claim authorized work-related expenses, including mileage and parking costs, reducing out-of-pocket expenses associated with field assignments.
Application and Recruitment Process
Candidates must complete multiple stages to be considered, including initial screening, reference checks, interviews for supervisory roles, and security vetting. Only applicants selected for further consideration will be contacted.
Applications must be submitted online through the official Census jobs portal. The recruitment window runs from November 4, 2025, to July 31, 2026, with hiring ongoing throughout this period. Prospective applicants are encouraged to apply early to increase their chances of being matched with a suitable role.
The data collected through the Census plays a vital role in shaping national policies and resource allocation. Accurate demographic information helps governments and organizations make informed decisions on public services, infrastructure, and community development projects.
By offering high-paying temporary positions with flexible schedules, Statistics Canada aims to attract a diverse pool of candidates to ensure comprehensive and accurate data collection.
For individuals seeking high-paying temporary employment in Canada, the 2026 Census presents a valuable opportunity to earn competitive wages while contributing to an essential national project.
