Apply Now: €5,000 Grants for Youth Vocational Training Projects in East Africa

A new funding window has opened for organisations offering vocational and informal skills training across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia. The programme, launched by the Van Doorn Stichting Foundation, aims to support training centres and NGOs that are improving youth employability and widening access to practical skills development for young people aged 14 to 28.

The initiative focuses on strengthening institutions that help vulnerable youth gain the skills needed for economic independence and long-term stability.

Purpose of the Funding Call

The programme is designed to expand access to vocational and informal training for young people who face financial and structural obstacles to formal education. The Foundation is seeking to work with organisations that have a strong track record in skills development and are ready to scale or improve their current training programmes.

Eligible applicants include:
• Vocational training centres with at least five years of active operations
• NGOs and community-based organisations delivering informal skills training, entrepreneurship coaching, or youth empowerment programmes

Projects must focus on one or more of the following goals:
• Upgrading tools, equipment, or learning materials to improve training quality
• Expanding access through scholarships, reduced fees, internship placements, or employability pathways
• Supporting disadvantaged youth in underserved or rural communities to gain marketable skills

The overall aim is to support institutions already generating positive impact at the grassroots level and help them extend training opportunities to more young people.

Grant Size and Eligibility Requirements

The foundation will award up to €5,000 (EUR) per project. The funding is intended for improving or expanding existing initiatives rather than constructing new facilities.

Eligible countries:
• Kenya
• Tanzania
• Uganda
• Zambia

Applicant requirements:
• A clearly defined educational or vocational mission
• At least five years of operational experience for formal training institutions
• A proven engagement record for NGOs and informal training providers
• An implementation-ready project plan with realistic objectives and supporting documents

Funding will not cover new classroom construction, new workshop buildings, or any expenses incurred before approval.

How to Apply

The application process involves two stages:

<
  1. Initial Application
Organisations must first submit a short proposal outlining their project concept, goals, and expected impact.
  2. Final Application
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a detailed proposal with budgets, timelines, and required documentation.

Applications should demonstrate how the project will expand training access, improve quality, and directly benefit vulnerable youth. Organisations are encouraged to present measurable outcomes such as increased enrollment, improved job placement, or updated training tools.

Why This Funding Opportunity Is Important

Youth unemployment remains a major challenge in East Africa, especially for those excluded from formal education systems. Many young people lack access to practical, market-relevant skills that can unlock employment or entrepreneurship opportunities.

This funding programme supports institutions working directly with these young people, helping them build technical skills, earn sustainable livelihoods, and strengthen economic resilience. By investing in existing training centres and community groups, the foundation aims to boost local innovations and empower young people through job-ready skills.

Call for Applications

Training centres, NGOs, and community organisations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, or Zambia that meet the criteria are encouraged to apply. This is an opportunity to strengthen ongoing programmes, upgrade training facilities, and reach more young people in need of career-building skills.

Full application guidelines, eligibility details, and submission instructions are available on the foundation’s official website.
