The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development offers a unique opportunity for students who want to build careers in global governance, conflict resolution, environmental law, and international security. The programme trains future leaders to address major global challenges through a combination of legal, political and sustainability-focused studies.

Why the Programme Is Important

The world is facing a growing wave of interconnected crises, often described as a global polycrisis. These challenges include armed conflicts, terrorism, climate instability, cyber threats, forced displacement, and declining democratic governance. Tackling these issues requires experts with a multidisciplinary understanding of law, security and sustainable development.

Programme Overview

The ILSPSD programme was created to respond directly to these global realities. It is a two-year master’s degree delivered by six European universities with support from more than 30 international partner institutions. The course equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to international law, peacebuilding and global sustainability.

Programme Structure and Study Path

Students experience an international academic journey across multiple countries. Over a 24-month period, candidates study at three or more partner institutions.

The study path includes:
Starting at Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany for core courses in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development.
Continuing at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals in Spain for advanced training in international security theories.
Choosing a specialisation track in one of the following universities:
International Law and International Security – University of Glasgow, United Kingdom
Security and Conflict – Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium
Globalization, Law and Security – Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal
International Law and Human Rights – University of Tartu, Estonia
The final semester combines a research dissertation with the option of a work placement, giving students practical experience in international institutions, NGOs or research centres.

Academic and Professional Enrichment

Students benefit from additional opportunities designed to strengthen their academic and practical skills. These include summer schools, legal clinics, expert-led workshops, guest lectures and applied research projects. The programme provides access to global practitioners, allowing students to develop professional networks in international law, diplomacy and security.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the ILSPSD programme are prepared for careers across a wide range of international sectors. Possible pathways include:
United Nations agencies and global governance organisations
International courts and tribunals
European Union institutions
Government ministries and diplomatic services
Humanitarian and development organisations
Research institutes, think tanks and academic institutions

Programme Impact

The programme empowers students to contribute meaningfully to peace, security and sustainable development worldwide.
