Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic SUG Inauguration: Acting Rector Urges New Leaders to Prioritize Student Welfare

The Acting Rector of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Dr. Akanimoh Jonah, has called on the newly inaugurated Executive Council of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to place student welfare at the center of their administration while fostering strong collaboration with the institution’s management.

Dr. Jonah made this known during the inauguration ceremony of the 12th SUG Executive Council, held at the Polytechnic Library Conference Hall. He emphasized the importance of responsible leadership, urging the student executives to address student concerns through constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue.

He also stressed the need for effective synergy between the executive and legislative arms of the union, noting that both bodies must clearly understand their responsibilities and operate within their constitutional roles to ensure smooth governance and stability within the student community.

In his valedictory remarks, the immediate past SUG President, Comrade Wisdom Udoimuk, expressed appreciation to the Polytechnic management for the support received during his tenure. He advised the new leadership to uphold values of integrity, transparency, and accountability while discharging their duties.

Delivering his inaugural address, the newly sworn-in SUG President, Comrade Paulinus Akpan, pledged to lead an inclusive administration that represents the interests of all students, regardless of political or ideological differences. He called for collective support from students, staff, and management to move the institution forward and build a more united academic community.

Akpan reaffirmed his commitment to addressing pressing student challenges, including welfare concerns and academic-related issues. He disclosed plans to set up strategic committees that will focus on resolving key matters affecting students and improving overall campus life.

He also expressed gratitude to both the institution’s management and the student body for the confidence reposed in him, assuring them of his dedication to excellence and service-driven leadership throughout his tenure.

The event was attended by key stakeholders within the institution, including the Acting Rector, Dr. Akanimoh Jonah; the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Mercy Ukpanah; the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Unyime Udoudo; academic staff; student leaders; and members of the student community.

The inauguration marks the beginning of a new leadership phase within the Students’ Union Government, with expectations high for improved student representation, enhanced welfare initiatives, and stronger collaboration between students and the Polytechnic administration.
