Federal Polytechnic Oko Organises Two-Day Research Methodology Training for Students

The management of Federal Polytechnic Oko has reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and innovation with the successful hosting of a two-day training programme on students’ research methodology aimed at equipping students with essential research and analytical skills in the digital age.

Speaking during the programme held at the institution’s Alumni Building, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, urged students to approach research as a valuable opportunity for intellectual growth and personal development rather than seeking shortcuts or adopting unhealthy academic practices.

The Rector, who was represented by the Director of TETFund, Dr. Helen Nnabuenyi, expressed concern that many students still view research as a difficult burden, leading some to rely on copied materials, previously completed projects, or excessive dependence on supervisors.

She encouraged participants to remain focused throughout the training and take full advantage of the opportunity to enhance their academic and professional capacities. Dr. Nnabuenyi also commended the organisers for initiating a programme designed to strengthen students’ understanding of modern research practices.

The training was organised by the Directorate of Research and Development in collaboration with the Directorate of Short Courses, Seminars, Workshops and Conferences under the theme, “Students Research in a Digital World: Importance and Relevance.”

Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Rector (Academic) of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr. Nkiruka Maria-Assumpta Akabuike, highlighted the critical role of research in developing analytical thinking, creativity, intellectual independence, and evidence-based reasoning among students.

According to her, students who actively engage in quality research become solution providers, innovators, and future leaders capable of driving societal transformation and sustainable development.

Dr. Akabuike identified several challenges affecting student research in modern academic environments, including information overload, academic dishonesty, inadequate funding, and limited mentorship opportunities. She therefore called on educational institutions and stakeholders to invest more in digital infrastructure, research laboratories, reliable internet access, and academic databases to improve research productivity and innovation.

Earlier in a joint address, the Director of Research and Development, Dr. Ann Umechukwu, alongside the Director of Short Courses, Seminars, Workshops and Conferences, Dr. Chioma Eni, encouraged students to maximize the knowledge, skills, and practical experience offered during the training programme.

The directors also appreciated the Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, for approving and supporting the initiative, describing her leadership and 12-point agenda as instrumental to the ongoing transformation and repositioning of the Polytechnic towards academic excellence and sustainable institutional growth.

The event attracted several academic administrators, facilitators, and dignitaries, including the Director of Students Affairs, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, former Acting Rector, Dr. Ugochukwu Okeke, as well as facilitators Amb. Prince Nwankwo and Dr. Gloria Nneka-Okeke Muogbo, among others.
