UK Opens Applications for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2025

The United Kingdom has officially announced the opening of applications for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2025, giving postgraduate students from developing and middle-income Commonwealth countries the opportunity to study for a Master’s degree in the UK.
The programme, administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), is part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to promoting educational equity and supporting international development across Commonwealth nations.
A Life-Changing Opportunity for Developing Nations
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are among three Master’s-level initiatives under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). The scheme is designed to remove financial barriers for talented students from countries with limited access to advanced education.
Successful applicants receive full financial support, which includes:
- Full tuition fees
- Return airfare to the UK
- Monthly living allowance
By covering these expenses, the programme allows scholars to focus entirely on their studies. Upon completing their one-year Master’s programme, recipients are expected to return to their home countries equipped with advanced knowledge and skills that can drive social, economic, and developmental progress.
Eligible Countries
Applicants must be citizens or hold refugee status in one of the CSC’s designated eligible countries. This includes nations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific such as:
- Nigeria
- Ghana
- Kenya
- Uganda
- Zambia
- South Africa
- India
- Bangladesh
- Pakistan
- Sri Lanka
Permanent residence in one of these eligible countries is mandatory.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2025, candidates must:
- Be available to begin studies in the UK by September 2025
- Hold at least an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree, or a lower second-class degree with an additional relevant postgraduate qualification
- Demonstrate genuine financial need, proving they cannot afford to study in the UK without this scholarship
- Not have studied or worked in a high-income country for more than one academic year
The scheme particularly prioritizes applicants who are committed to using their education for the benefit of their communities and home countries.
Application Process
Applications are made through participating UK universities, which handle the first stage of selection. Once shortlisted, candidates are reviewed and approved by the CSC to ensure they meet the programme’s objectives.
Applicants are strongly advised to:
- Research participating universities and eligible courses
- Prepare a strong personal statement
- Highlight how their chosen field of study will contribute to development in their home country
Course and Study Conditions
The scholarship covers one full-time Master’s programme at a participating UK university. Scholars must commit fully to this degree during the scholarship period, as funding does not extend to other academic programmes or additional qualifications.
Building Skills for Development
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are not only a financial lifeline but also an investment in human capital. Scholars are expected to apply their acquired skills to tackle pressing challenges such as healthcare improvement, sustainable development, governance reforms, and economic growth in their home nations.
