President Tinubu Approves Conversion of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, as part of efforts to strengthen technical education and accelerate the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The approval was announced in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the decision reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding specialised education, promoting human capital development, and supporting economic growth through innovation and technology.
The newly established university is expected to serve as a centre for advanced teaching, research, and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and other emerging technologies. The institution will also focus on producing highly skilled graduates capable of driving industrial growth and advancing Nigeria’s mining industry.
The Presidency explained that the approval followed a proposal presented by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly. The senator reportedly advocated for the creation of a specialised university that would take advantage of Nasarawa State’s abundant solid mineral resources while supporting the Federal Government’s industrialisation objectives.
According to the statement, the proposal aligns with ongoing efforts to establish higher institutions that address industry-specific manpower needs and provide students with practical, technical, and innovation-driven education.
Government officials believe the new university will play a major role in developing the skilled workforce required for value addition in the mining industry. It is also expected to encourage research, technological advancement, sustainable mineral resource development, and increased local expertise, reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign technical professionals.
The conversion is also seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader agenda to align tertiary education with national economic priorities. The administration noted that specialised universities are essential for supporting industrial expansion, economic diversification, job creation, and long-term national development.
To facilitate a smooth transition, President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant government agencies to begin the legal, administrative, and regulatory processes required for the conversion.
The agencies have been tasked with ensuring that the transition from a federal polytechnic to a specialised university complies with existing laws, academic regulations, and quality assurance standards. Necessary approvals and institutional arrangements are expected to be completed before the university fully commences operations.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to investing in education as a strategic tool for innovation, economic growth, and workforce development. It stated that expanding specialised higher education institutions will equip Nigerian graduates with the practical knowledge and technical expertise needed to support the country’s industrial ambitions.
The upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology is expected to position Nasarawa State as a leading hub for mining and engineering education while strengthening research, innovation, and skills development in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
