The Acting Vice – Chancellor, Dr. Oluremi Nurudeen Olaleye stated that that over 1200 coconut trees have been planted so far, with the intention of planting 2000 trees before the end of the year 2022.
He noted that the first 400 pilot coconut trees planted recorded success rate of about 80 percent due to the challenges of pests and wandering animals. He added that counter measures are in place to tackle such occurrences this year.
Speaking further, Dr. Olaleye explained that Management’s decision to plant 2000 coconut trees was because of it’s benefits which includes highly nutritious edible seeds when it is matured, providing landscapes that beautifies the premises and ensuring food security. He added that the tree planting day was also an avenue to implement goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as it will cool and moisten the air, create oxygen, act as filtering systems to clean the air and soil while stabilizing the ground against erosion and mitigating climate crisis such as global warming.
