DSPG Rector Climbs Rooftop for Solar Installation Training with SLT Students

Students of the Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) department at Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku (DSPG), had a hands-on experience in solar panel installation on March 7, 2025. The training, which took place on the rooftop of the SLT building, saw the institution’s Working Rector, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, actively participating alongside the students.
The initiative, aimed at equipping students with practical knowledge of solar energy systems, was made possible through the efforts of the Head of the SLT department, Dr. Timothy Oni. Students expressed their excitement over the training and appreciated the opportunity to gain real-world experience in renewable energy technology.
During the session, participants learned critical aspects of solar installation, including pre-installation assessments, system mounting, wiring, and safety precautions. The training covered:
Pre-Installation Procedures
- Assessing energy needs: Determining average energy consumption.
- Evaluating the site: Ensuring adequate sunlight exposure and structural integrity.
- Choosing a solar panel system: Selecting appropriate panels, inverters, and mounting equipment.
- Obtaining permits: Securing necessary approvals for installation.
Installation Process
- Site preparation: Cleaning and preparing the designated installation area.
- Mounting system installation: Fixing the support structures.
- Solar panel installation: Placing and securing the panels.
- Wiring and connections: Linking panels to the inverter and electrical panel.
- Inverter installation: Setting up the inverter for energy conversion.
- Electrical connections: Connecting the system to the grid.
- Testing and commissioning: Ensuring proper functionality.
Post-Installation Maintenance
- Performance monitoring: Regular system checks and maintenance.
- Net metering: Measuring and utilizing excess energy efficiently.
- Sustainable energy use: Enjoying long-term benefits of clean energy.
The training reflects DSPG’s commitment to equipping students with practical skills that align with global energy trends. The presence of the rector on the rooftop not only encouraged the students but also underscored the institution’s hands-on approach to learning.
